Someone who has owned their first gen 4runner since new will be able to answer this question:

When buying from the factory, was there an option to get your top a different color from the color of your truck? ie a red truck with a white or black fiberglass top, as opposed to the red one?

I have seen mixed and matched and just wanted to know if it was original or not.

The reason I ask is I am going to go look at a replacement one today, and I was just wondering if it would be a dead giveaway that my top did not come with my truck as its not the same color.

Thanks
bryan

so you are saying that you could have technically ordered a red truck with a black top in 1988 as opposed to red on red, which was the standard option?

you would think the color match would be the option and black would be standard. huh

Our creme 85 came with a black top and we once owned a red 86 from new which came with a red top. I know that I've seen red ones with a white top but they might have been an 84 or 85? That's all I got on the subject.

I think you could go black, white, or body color with no problem. It probably wouldn't cost much to have it painted either if you don't like the color of the one that you're getting.

so it appears my truck was supposed to come with a black top, not a red one...
interesting.

well i went to look at it.
it was on a 4runner that has been kind of stored for three years in a garage. it was really dirty and dusty, but did not appear to be faded at all.

the only down side that i could see then was that there was holes drilled in the rear portion of it, for a yakima roof bracket. (brackets still on it) and there was a little rust in the sliding window tracks, as one would expect.

rubbers looked decent, and there weren't any chunks of fiberglass busted off it on the inside.

Do you think its worth $200 after he washes it up and i can take a good look in the day light??
Remember I am on the east coast and there are not a plethora of these trucks like you guys have out west

I always treat this stuff the same way I treat boats with fiberglass hulls. Inspect, inspect, inspect the glass for cracks and delaminating where it wouldn't ordinarily be visible.

Pop the inside liner and see if the bolt holes and mounts have had heavy gear ran or if someone's stood on the roof at any point.

Any hairline cracks, delams, chips, splintering and all I offer is $50 at most, which if the top's not entirely repairable you can get back by parting it out.
