Man, here I am sitting in California (with the Mrs) and this thread has me jonesin' for some Southern Utah time. HITR, Red to Blue, Henry's and Elk Ridge/Bears Ears are some of my favorite haunts. Can't wait to get back down there! Great pics

Come to Mississippi and we will entertain you.

That is a neck of the woods I'd like to spend some time in, I've never been off the pavement in the SE U.S.

I couldn't bring myself to think of it in terms of "we got to go while we still could", because we knew about these actions prior to going, but I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it with that frame of mind. This area needs to stay accessible. It is truly an amazing and holy place to all who visit, with history to a wide range of peoples...
I certainly hope it can remain that way. Certainly steps may need to be taken to protect historical aspects, but closing it off does not benefit anyone.

Fortunately even a with a NM land status, we will still have access to major routes, particularly those that are listed as Class D County Roads, major FS routes, etc. Unfortunately we will lose spurs, primitive camp access, etc. GSENM happened in 1996 and now 20 years later the losses are really sinking in. See they didn't close every spur or side trail right off the bat, well not off paper anyway. Rather they slowly signed, marked, blocked, gated and seeded historic routes leaving a pretty spoon-fed park experience. Don't get me wrong there is still some awesome adventure to be had in GSENM but you certainly don't just stumble on it. Glen Canyon NRA is the same, many of us were discussing the Rincon Trail in a parallel HITR thread here on Mud. That closure happened in 1979 (on paper) and to this day the NRA knows it's being run and only sporadically does any enforcement (admittedly due to resources) but for 20 years after the fact it was completely uncontested. In fact it wasn't until the State vs. Fed RS2477 battles that it once again really popped up on the radar. Many of the Elk Ridge/Bears Ears routes are also state claimed RS2477 routes so a battle will be had...

Long and short, if you're going to poach it... get active in saving it too!

We kept running into these guys that give tours in a fleet of 80s.

Chesler Park

The Navtec crew has some pretty cool 80's, we've had the opportunity to help them with parts over the years and they pick up 80's from time to time from SLC Cruiserheads. Good folks.

Do you mean from the Escalante side? No way, you could start in Moab, drive down to the trailhead, do the entire trail and back to Moab in 1 day. You could do the Escalante side from Moab in a day, but that would be a long day on a dirt road, and it would end at the cliff above Lake Powell on the other side of the river from where we were.

Edit:I now realize you guys were talking just Ehill/Chessler which is certainly doable in a 200.

Zero problem getting to E-Hill/Chesler in a 200 in fact we did Elk Ridge, Beef Basin, Bobby's Hole, Chesler, Elephant, etc in a bone stock 200 (had stock size BFG AT's)... in the SNOW/ICE I won't say it was easy and we did have to do some winching but if it would have been dry, no issue at all.

After almost 3 months and Rubithon(which was great fun this year), I'm still mentally on this Utah trip. I'm hoping Dusy Ershim will fix that or if not, Maybe 12 fishing days in Alaska will.

Anybody on this thread want to go to Death Valley in lateish October for some back country sight seeing? Likely only HEL2 (see above) but still a really good place to explore and goof off.

That's the top of my bucket list. Top. Would love to. Maybe I can get someone to drive my truck out. What's the best fly in? Vegas?

imo, SLC. Visit the LCHM, do Skykine, Swell, Henry, Canyonlands, etc and loop back around the other side of the Colorado and do Moab, Dubinki, Book Cliffs, Swell east, etc. We call it the UGT, Utah Grand Tour. Minimum 2 weeks for straight shot or break it up and fly in/out of Moab.

So when are we leaving @wngrog @pmccraney @Bomar @Fireman ? (and whoever else)

In for DV @Cruiserdrew

That will be perfect since I will be in Southern Utah OCtober 18-24... Then I can continue across 50 and drop in through Tonapah through the Amargosa Valley and meet you all. Perfect.

Well, that's good news. Does that mean you'll be in your 70, or do you need one of mine? (But if you smoke in it, I kill you!)

I ain't got 2 weeks. Wish I did.

Who wants to drive my pile from MS to UT?

Not sure what we're talking about here, but Death Valley, is not in Utah. It's in California, and a tiny bit in Nevada. Utah is 600 miles away.
