Question for the forum, I have a 2006 LX470, and looking to get a hard shell roof top tent. Anyone have any luck mounting to the factory roof rack (maybe adding 2 more cross bars?) rather than also needing to install an entirely new roof rack? Thoughts, advice welcome.

Do a google search for "Factory roof rack roof top tent 100 series ih8mud"

lots of threads out there

most people add that t-slot extrusion type of material for a stock / heavy duty mix. I added two oem cross bars at one point and that is probably solid enough.

Thanks you! was just starting to read the thread on the 80/20 fix, so that will be something I will consider.

How much space do you need down below? you travel solo or with a group?

Just do all your research on pros and cons of RTT and make sure you consider sleeping in the vehicle as an option too. The roof top tent seems a bit more trendy than effective but it totally depends on your build and what you are going for. Most people I see with roof top tents around here are parked at the local hotels with shiny new trucks lol I never understood that.

Cool. Yeah maybe the RTT is the way to go. Stay higher up than the bears and lions =]

Just to give you an alternative to consider, the SS1 sleeper setup for inside the truck is awesome but you sacrifice some indoor cargo space. I have the second row removed and under the platform is my storage along with the rooftop.

I'm heavily biased towards it because it fits my needs perfectly for me + wife however it is tight and is best for just crawling in and watching a flick as you fall asleep. Can't really sit up.

After experiencing my parents roof rack tent when I did a week-long four wheeling trip with them, I realized my 10 minute to man tent was way easier than a roof rack and all the bull**** that comes with it. I was always set up an hour before they finished and it was way easier for me to find a level camping spot

LFD Off-road makes replacement bars that are T slot. I haven’t installed them but they’re beloved in some other LC groups and would be clear than using the factory bars and WAY cheaper than a new roof rack.

Thank you, I'll ping them. I see they make them for 4Runner and 200 series, hopefully they will fit in a 100 series. I'll follow up and let folks know what I find.
