F engine freeze plug not setting (1 Viewer)

I installed OEM freeze plugs (96411-45000) in my f engine and they don’t set in all the way. This doesn’t look right, but they won’t go in any further. I did put a light coating of permatex pipe dope on the hole lips, but that shouldn’t be the problem if there is one. Any ideas?

You need the dish plugs @middlecalf posted the pic of.
 
I think the dome faces out, so when you pound on it with the correct size socket it will swell and fit tight
Yep convex side out. These are called welch plugs in case you want to go down a rabbit hole. When I've used this style in the past, I'd be sure to really clean the block surface. No old rust flakes or bits of permatex. Put a little film of permatex like you did before and it should seal no problem.

Interesting, I've never seen another motor done that way although I don't have a Toyota six to compare it to. I would think they'd be a bit harder to remove than the more conventional orientation.
