It works. I had my doubts when first looking at the details, but except for the usual problems dealing with old pieces, it went smoothly.

First, some background:

The original weatherstripping was held in place by 2 flat aluminum pieces, each with 7 holes for hold clips, each hole being 3 1/4 inches apart, including the distance between the two inner holes on the separate pieces.
The clips, if you need them, are sold individually by SOR, for $.35 each, part No. 108-42c/138-70. (14 total)

I chose to start at one end, with the end of the alum piece 1/4 inch from the end of the window opening on the tailgate.
I clamped the alum piece, which actually fits into the felt groove on the new piece, and started drilling holes until I had 14 drilled.

This was actually the biggest pain in the ass of the whole process. The part of the new piece you are drilling is rubber coated metal, and needs to be reamed out a little to fit those clips, which are wider than they are high. I screwed screws into every other hole while I reamed out the others, and then switched.

I cut off the right end 1/4 inch from the end of the alum rod, put all of the new clips through both the alum and rubber coated new piece, and proceeded to press the clips into the holes in the exterior wall of the tailgate.

It was painstaking in a way, because each clip had to be pressed in individually. I used a heavy large tip screwdriver and a hammer and tapped each one in.

However, the finished product exceeded my expectations.

Just a thought, though.

I looked at the same item on my FJ40 doors, and it is actually probably a better pure match, except for the length.

However, $47 for the 4Runner piece, if you are willing to do a little work is a good bargain.

Again, the piece the parts girl ordered for me was for an 88 4Runner, but I would imagine they are all pretty much the same.

Pighead, thanks again for the advice and direction.

Nice. I know what i will be buying this week. Thanks for the info

WTF?!? Aluminum strips?

Angry b/c something else on my Pig is missing.

Does anybody have a set for sale?

If not I guess I will have to fab.

lc69hunter, can you provide some additional dimensions for these f'in strips?

Sorry to sound grumpy, your install looks good.

Did you use the SOR clips?

PS, in the third picture, what are the pieces up at the top?

Pablo, the aluminum pieces are available from SOR (used) at $12 each part No 138-09U. And yes I used the SOR clips, as I didn't have enough salvageable from what was left. ($1.99 each)

Those pieces in pic 3 are what was left of my original rubber.

I can measure when I get down to the shop. They should be fairly easy to fab.

Just installed it today. Had to pull out my window to get it in :frown:, but I was able to check what kind of gear I have in my little window motor.:D I love it! It beats the hell out of the sharp, riddled, grungy, broken rubber that I had before.

Thank you!!

thanks for the hard work. the weatherstripping "sticky" thread is so long and confusing it makes my head spin. maybe if we took each specific area and made a sticky like this.... anyway thank you.

I agree, that thing needs to be revised and maybe thinned out a bit.

$47 with tax.

I got a box from C.Dan in the mail today...
Weatherstrip 68160-89111 lists at $34.47, but only $25.85 for us 'Mudders.
He did charge me $0.75 each for the clips though...
