Update:
Been driving the truck around town. got about 200 miles on the first almost full tank. It's down to indicating a little above 1/2. So far, so good.

I want to run one full tank through it as a test that it all works (fuel pickup, sender, breather...), before we publish and say it's a good thing.

So while running the tank out take note of the "slosh" effect on 20 gal of fuel floating around in a 40 gal tank. With a good suspension do you think the lack of baffels will be a issue? (ie. does it move the truck around after stopping from the fuel shift)

So far, I've seen no evidence of slosh. I can't even hear it. I thought that the fuel return line would sound like somebody tinkling in the tank all the time, and the sloshing would sound like... well, sloshing.

But nothing so far.
 
LPG tank

My 1989 GXL LandCruiser (F3) has an additional LPG tank based at the bank right before the tow-bar...
it contains 45 ltrs and Willie has about 1:4 ratio on either fuel...
put the LPG nozzle through the back fender...
kind of a hassle to get to the safety valve when working on the engine, but a steady hand with a plier generally does it.

dunno if this helps, but i'll take photos if you're interested.
 
LPG tank 2

the LPG tank is pretty well hidden, and is protected by the bumper.
I'm in Australia, so i'll post photos tomorrow, its too dark for decent photos now.
 
how vulnerable is the gas tank to damage from boulders on the trail? I mean, it must hang down a lot lower, and of course, there would no longer be a spare tire to protect it.
It doesn't hang down lower than the stock crossmember w/ spare tire.

But it is vulnerable, in that there is no skidplate, or sparetire or x-member underneath to provide protection. It is higher than the rear axle, springs, shackles and rear hitch.


As a random aside, the fuel tank is attached to the body, not the frame. If the vehicle had a 1" body lift, the tank would be that much higher, relative to the frame, axle, bumper. I'm thinking about doing this to accommodate 35" tires.
 
Tank performance update:
I was driving the truck today, doing some WOT testing, and it lost power at the top of 2nd gear. Stumbled, died, restarted, died, etc for about a minute before it finally came back to normal. The A/F gauge was showing extreme lean operation, so it was a lack of fuel to the carb. It is down below 1/2 tank now, so I am thinking it might have sloshed fuel away from the pickup, or it might have had trouble lifting fuel from the bottom of the tank, uphill to the carb, under hard accel. The engine has a 1963/1978 hybrid fuel pump, which might be weak, contributing to this problem.

Will keep driving and reporting.

Have you guys thought of something like to smaller tanks that would equal one massive large tank? two advantes to this. If you are out inthe middle of no where and you hit a rock and puncture the tank you loose your fuel! This asumes that both are near full. Perhaps a small rupture in one tank is detected and you have enough time to transfer fuel to the second tank.

Second tank can be used for veggie oil. This is my goal and that is to have a duel tank setup. Makes more sence and no need to have baffles.

Plumming might be a little more complicated but thats because we want redundency in the middle of no where.

I've seen one in a desiel, hard to navigate the site (for me) but you'll find several types of dual tank setups, some are for H2O capacity..$$$$..
 
Im getting my truck back from the restoration soon. Ill report what kind of total mileage Im getting from that 1HZ and 50 gallon tank.....
 
Drivability problem, probable fix

Today's update:
The truck had been experiencing some occasional fuel feed problems, stumbling/cutting out on WOT acceleration or cutting out on steep hills. These symptoms have only become noticeable as the tank level has dropped below 1/2. On Friday, it would not restart in the parking lot of the parts store. The carb & filter were empty, and the pump was only pulling air through the filter. After borrowing a gas can and dumping 6 gallons in, it started and ran home fine.

An air leak was suspected in the lines from the tank somewhere. Visual inspection, and a vac test back to the tank showed no leaks. That left a leak in the tank pickup.

First thing we learned: The pickup/sender assembly can be removed from the tank without dropping the tank! :bounce:

A low pressure test (lung powered) was applied to the pickup tube in the tank. Sure enough, it was bubbling at my silver solder joint where the extended pickup tube was attached to the steel tube from the plate. After being thoroughly dried of gas residue, the joint was resoldered and tested. No leakage now.

We learned: QC testing on solder joints should be more than visual.

While the pickup plate was out, the tank was dipsticked. It showed a little more than 1/2 full, which is what the gage is showing with the addition of the 6 gallons on friday. So it was not out of fuel when it would not start.

Now to keep driving and see if the problem resurfaces as the fuel level goes down below the solder joint.
