Like we needed help to see that! :D

Looks good, you will feel awesome when you are out of debt. I hope you get top dollar for your other cruiser. I have a 76 fj40 and you are right... it is nearly the perfect year cruiser.

Keep up the good work.

I havent put in any time on the trailer for the last month. Between work, Helping MrPepper with his 40, working on the 76', ( https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/498827-1976-fj40-refresh.html#post6768830 ) and a few other distractions, I have had my hands full. The last week was spent working on our new to us pop up trailer. We bought a 93' Coleman Seneca pop up trailer. This will sleep and shelter the whole family comfortably when were NOT far from pavement. First Item of business was a spring over. Ive also been going through all of the P.O.'s "fixes" and Re-fixing them the right way.

I also pulled the bad engine out of the 76' and am working on cleaning the desmogged 2F that will take its place. Its out of an 83 Fj60. 148 compression across the board.:) I still need to swap out the exhaust manifold for the 2 peice headers i have, the intake manifold and the fuel pump. Then it will go in.

The new reciever Lunette showed up today, so I installed it. Hopefully that ends the binding issue that I had in Moab.

In a moment of clarity, I made the decision to abandon trying to get the 76 back on the road. It was really in rough shape and far from complete. Instead, I decided to put the 2F into the 71' that I have had in my back pocket for the last 2 years. (really dont know what I was thinking with the 76'. I blame in on a bad case of accute cruiseritis.) the 71' is much more complete, in better condition, and just needs an engine. I have the 2F, and the 4 speed from the 76' to match. So thats the direction im going to go in. Since the 71 has a reciever hitch and a tow bar, I hooked everything up and decided to parade around the neighborhood to see how it pulled..........Like a dream. My excitement is hard to contain.

My god that is a horrible idea...

"My god that is a horrible idea... "

Jason, I tow heavy loads every day for work and have been towing trailers since the time I got my licence. I have flat towed 40's half way across the country without incident. The 40 tracks flawlessly and the trailer is light and properly tongue weighted. All towing equipment is in perfect condition. I also meet all the state regulations for double towing and am well under the limits for weight and length. I respectfully disagree, but Im willing to listen to why you think its a horrible idea.

Ya'll don't freak out. He said he was just playing with it dragging it around the neighborhood. It's not llike he was running down the Interstate at 70 mph. Probably didn't get over 30 did you?
But you could if you had a bigger tow rig!

I've towed double like that before. No big deal. I used my Diesels and yes, I do pull it all at 70 mph! But, I have brakes on all my vehicles and trailers so I can stop my little train as fast as you can with your one trailer. Maybe faster!

BTY, We use the Roadmaster Air Brake assist on my Rock Crawler and working electric brakes on all my trailers I drag behind it. And yes, Doubles are legal where I live too.
And I do have a Class A Doubles endorsement.

You just gotta remember to swing wider on the corners! :steer:
I don't reccomend it for everyone though! There are some folks who can't back a car up without a trailer.

Fun Stuff!

Thanks super slow. Max speed was 30. Some day, I would like to pull it on the interstate, but ive got to upgrade the trailer with brakes and perhapse use a buddy brake on the 40. I would not do it without being safe and legal.

So you agree that it is not the "optimal" idea there.

Your 80 is not up to handling that amount of weight. They are "rated" at 5k. Which IMHO is generous..

The brakes on a 80 series are not even close to dealing with that setup. What would happen if you had to lock the brakes up on your 80 at 80mph while towing ta setup?? That whole situation is dangerous. Sure, you can drive around the neighborhood and be okay. But that is a far cry from being a functional way to tow..

I'll do all sorts of silly things for short distances. However, I do not want someone thinking that a double trailer setup like that through some pretty big mountain passes is a good idea by any means..

VI, I think you can get at least one more on there. Any chance you can triple with the '76, then the '71, followed by the trailer? I'd like to see how that looks. :D

Why stop at one more? I have 4 cruisers right now. I think I will link them all together plus the trailer and go find a mountain pass to go over at 70 MPH with no brakes. :flipoff2:

Living in Texas I see all kinds of "Not Optimal or Advisable" towing configurations headed to Mexico. Sometimes just like VI's only with another car on the rear trailer. You wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it. Down right scary! I can only surmise they actually make it to the Border! Most of the cars I would drive to the grocery store with out any trailers, but these scavengers take them down the Highway everyday.

Sad that even here we have to put DISCLAIMERS on everything we write because of some "I dot 10 T" thinking if it works around the neighborhood it will work on the Interstate and down the mountain.

But, we've more common sense that some folks.

I should add that I wouldn't dare try pulling anything with my 4 Runner without brakes on the load. Just too much can go wrong with that light a truck.
But, I do love that truck.

Curt

I have 4 cars with tow bars and five trailers. Wonder how wide I'd have to swing to get that train out of my driveway????? JK:hillbilly:

80's are capable of 80 mph?!?

LOL! On a trailer, sure...

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Growing up in South Texas I can confirm everything Super Slow says is true. You'll see a 10yr-old Honda Civic pulling two other compact cars and the back window of the last one often says IN TOE (not my mis-spell) in big white shoe polish letters. It's hilarious and scary all at the same time.

Woulda never believed it if I hadn't just seen it!

That, and the amount of furniture, doors, and what ever else flew out of the back of someones truck lying on the side of the road!

I was thinking it was s bad idea for the neighborhood to see all your stuff st the same time. I rotate mine so they think their peer pressure is working and im a respectable member of the community

Problem is, thats not all my stuff. I am making a serious effort to thin it down but it seems like the pile keeps growing. :hillbilly:

Something like seling one and buying two?:hhmm::D

Finally a little more progress. I got a 4" thick queen sized mattress that fits inside like a glove. Came out of a sofa bed :hillbilly: . I have a 2" foam topper the same size that I can toss in too if the :princess: complains. But it is pretty comfortable as is. Way way better than the inflatable sleeping pads im used to.
