Hi all.

When I had my exhaust replaced a couple of years ago, the fellow at Midas said I had a small leak in the manifold.

It seems that the leak has grown more and more as my manifold sounds like a locomotive even from the cabin.

Sound about right?

Anyway, I want to fix it and no, I am not going to do a header. You guys know my thoughts on that.

So, I am assuming I have a cracked manifold as is common with these engines. Any tricks/watch outs when it comes to replacing the manifold? Easy job? It is OEM.

Thanks all.

Make sure you undo all the mounts on the exhaust back about halfway down the truck so you have room to move the front half around, especially the hard mount to the bellhousing.... You might try just having the mani resurfaced...

It could also be that you are having the same problem that is now plaguing my son's '87 4Runner: the studs are pulling out of the head. He was able to Helicoil one of them, but there's another one (far back one) that can't be reached without major surgery, so he's waiting for the time to take care of it.

When I had my head off for PM on the headgasket, I went ahead and Helicoil'd all the studs. Much easier to do it then.

Thanks guys.

So, I guess one does not know until it is removed i.e. whether it is cracked, warped or if it is stud related?

Rhetorical question of course.

Any recommended aftermarket manifolds? Toyota only?

If I was going with a manifold and not a header, I would be very tempted to try one of the $60 ones off ebay. Otherwise I would probably try a salvage yard. I did keep the original one off my 22RE when I installed the LCE header, just in case I ever wanted to go back but I don't think I will.

my buddy used a napa manifold and a felpro gasket. been 4 years no problem.

they typically crack right down the middle.

but like KLF said check the bolts make sure they are tight. if not, and its just loose, you'll want to replace the gasket anyway, cause its probably blown out. check out this site for information on the different kinds of gaskets used and how they wear:
The Complete Guide to Seals and Gaskets Used in Gasoline Engines

Found the issue.

It is a blown gasket between the header and the header pipe. Took the heat shield off and put my hand around that area and it was blowing exhaust like a tornado.

All the manifold bolts were tight and I did not feel any exhaust escaping around the head/manifold area.

Thought I would report back.

Funny you said that.

Midas gasket failed in 15 miles. I do nto have a show anymore and getting on my back in the snow/15 degree weather is just not my thing these days.

I have to take it back to them this week to repair.

Man, it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO quiet.
