AUXILIARY FAN
Wanted to install an aux fan in front of the condenser in order to help with the AC when it's 110º outside and I'm in stop-n-go traffic. Last time it was this hot the AC sucked and would blow out warm air. Hope this helps a bit. If not, I'll need to figure out something else. A radiator might also be next on the list.
Bought a Procomp 2053-S fan on eBay for about $40 and followed this great write-up: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/311276-pro-comp-14-aux-fax-install-97-lx450.html
I didn't follow it exactly, but it was a good help. I only removed the horns, nothing else. Just trimmed, hacked and bent stuff away until the damn thing fit.
Like a glove
Spacers and longer bolts for the horn mounts so it clears the fan
Wired up to a relay on my super-custom relay mount bar
Make sure to reverse the polarity of the fan wires so it blows fan INTO the condenser and not away from it
Fan has its own fuse in my aux fuse box. ******* I love this little box. Makes your life so much easier.
Wired up to a toggle switch in the dash. I want to be able to manually turn the fan on and off. The switch is powered only with the key in the ACC, so it can't run when the keys aren't in the ignition.
VSV FOR EGR
About 5k miles after my initial P0401 fix the code came back. The first time around the VSV and all other components tested fine. In my case it was old and cracked vacuum hoses under the intake. When putting everything back together I relocated the VSV out by the PS reservoir because I knew it was only a matter of time.
Sure enough, the light came back! First thing I did was test the VSV by applying 12v to the terminals. Nothing, DEAD! With 12v power applied air would still flow from one side to the to other. You couldn't hear a click either.
Not wanting to pay Toyota's stupid prices for a simple vacuum solenoid I ordered the Dorman 911-850 unit from Amazon for about $26. Tested it with 12v and it worked fine, you could hear the audible click. Let's see how long this thing lasts and hopefully the CEL never comes back!
A few weeks ago I also installed a new OEM blue hub fan clutch. I actually ordered it on eBay for much less than Toyota's prices and it's the exact same part number; Aisin FCT-004. I drained the fluid and replaced it with 30K CST oil. This replaced my old Eaton clutch which wasn't working too well even after a fluid change.
