AUXILIARY FAN
Wanted to install an aux fan in front of the condenser in order to help with the AC when it's 110º outside and I'm in stop-n-go traffic. Last time it was this hot the AC sucked and would blow out warm air. Hope this helps a bit. If not, I'll need to figure out something else. A radiator might also be next on the list.

Bought a Procomp 2053-S fan on eBay for about $40 and followed this great write-up: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/311276-pro-comp-14-aux-fax-install-97-lx450.html

I didn't follow it exactly, but it was a good help. I only removed the horns, nothing else. Just trimmed, hacked and bent stuff away until the damn thing fit.

Like a glove

Spacers and longer bolts for the horn mounts so it clears the fan

Wired up to a relay on my super-custom relay mount bar :flipoff2: Make sure to reverse the polarity of the fan wires so it blows fan INTO the condenser and not away from it

Fan has its own fuse in my aux fuse box. ******* I love this little box. Makes your life so much easier.

Wired up to a toggle switch in the dash. I want to be able to manually turn the fan on and off. The switch is powered only with the key in the ACC, so it can't run when the keys aren't in the ignition.

VSV FOR EGR
About 5k miles after my initial P0401 fix the code came back. The first time around the VSV and all other components tested fine. In my case it was old and cracked vacuum hoses under the intake. When putting everything back together I relocated the VSV out by the PS reservoir because I knew it was only a matter of time.

Sure enough, the light came back! First thing I did was test the VSV by applying 12v to the terminals. Nothing, DEAD! With 12v power applied air would still flow from one side to the to other. You couldn't hear a click either.

Not wanting to pay Toyota's stupid prices for a simple vacuum solenoid I ordered the Dorman 911-850 unit from Amazon for about $26. Tested it with 12v and it worked fine, you could hear the audible click. Let's see how long this thing lasts and hopefully the CEL never comes back!

A few weeks ago I also installed a new OEM blue hub fan clutch. I actually ordered it on eBay for much less than Toyota's prices and it's the exact same part number; Aisin FCT-004. I drained the fluid and replaced it with 30K CST oil. This replaced my old Eaton clutch which wasn't working too well even after a fluid change.

37" TIRES!!!!!!!!

Just kidding :flipoff2: Kinda. The used 35" tire I had on my spare came with a leak I tried to patch but it just wouldn't hold air. So I found a used 37x13.50 Super Swamper M16 on CL for cheap. Since I eventually plan on going with the 37s, I might as well get it now so I don't have to pay $400 for a brand new one later.

And of course, I just HAD to mount it up to see how it fits. HOLY CRAP. It looks so awesome. I feel like getting 5.29s and 37s sooner rather than later. Didn't get any rubbing either while taking a quick drive around the block. Oh well, at least these pics will have to hold me over until I'm ready for the 37s :o

37s make my 35s sad.

dig it!

I have 4.88s and glad i didn't get the 5.29s.

Some reasons. most of em are just my personal opinions. So please don't take offense.

at 80mph with 4.88s i am at almost 3,000 rpms. my BFG KM2s measure out to be around 36 inches tall. High RPMs poorer MPG.

5.29 pinion size scares me. 80s are heavy! it will be the weak link.

Even more so if you have longfields/ chromoly axles and ARP hub studs. Especially the front.

break a ring and pinion and your trip just went south. I have and it just sucks.

If you are a light wheeler and your 80 is mostly on the highway then 5.29s are fine.

I've been running maxxis creepy crawlers (37x12.5x16) on stock gears and I am not too sure about re gearing.. thanks for the info .

A friend of mine has an 80 built similar to mine with the same exact tires. I crawl a little better than he does but honestly with an auto.. it really does not matter that much to me. He has more experience crawling and does fine.

Since mine is a daily driver i kind of wish i kept the stock gearing. I changed my gears and got worse MPG. 1 mpg worse but still.

Just an FYI since we are talking about gearing.

I drove an 80 with stock axle gearing, 39.5 super swampers, and the Marlin 3.0 transfer case low range kit. I didn't really notice that much of a difference. My friend that owns that 80 says that it does better on downhills.
with an auto if i want to go slower i just hit the brakes : )

Thanks for the input. Since I'm still researching all opinions are welcome :) Everybody always says 5.29s are the way to go for anything bigger than a 35" tire.

You said you're at about 3000 RPMs at 80mph with 36" tires and 4.88 gears. Wouldn't 5.29s lower your RPMs at the same speed?

About strength, I was reading a thread where folks recommended letting the axle shafts be the weak point, or the "fuse". Get your R&P cryo treated, chromoly Birfs and use the stock axle shafts. That way if something goes, it won't be the expensive Birfs or the hard-to-replace R&P. Thoughts about that?

And I also really should have my truck checked out. The previous owner says he THINKS the truck was re-geared but he never confirmed with the previous owners. I bought the truck with 35s and a small lift already on it. At 75mph I'm well under 3000 RPMs.

I would need to drive a stock truck to see if there's actually a difference. Or maybe another truck with 35s and stock gears to see if it's similar. My truck is not an extreme crawler by any means but I do plan on spending a lot of time in the rocks. And I also drive 1-3 hrs on the freeway to get to the rocks, hence my dilemma :)

MONSTALINER IS HERE!
Ended up ordering the paint while Monstaliner had their July promo going on (free shipping and a free quart of Chassis Saver). One step closer! Hope to have it done within the next month or two.

MORE WHEELING
Wife was out of town this weekend so I decided to take the dogs and go play in the forest (Kyburz / Silver Fork Rd area). Good times!

What color monstaliner did you go with?
Same color you did! I settled on that color a while back, but you beat me to it :flipoff2: Can't wait to get this thing finally painted. Been almost a year now.

Sweet, I'm really happy with the color choice. Two tone or doing the whole thing?

Yeah looks like a really nice color. I thought about doing a two tone but don't really wanna mess with taping stuff off and waiting for it to dry. So one color it is!

Went on a marathon day trip into the Sierras yesterday and explored 5 beautiful lakes. Bowman, McMurray, Weaver, Sawmill and Faucherie. Also found a few campsites which will make for an awesome weekend. Enjoy!

This is probably the worst photo but it's one of my favorites. Distorted colors, crazy lens flare, blown out highlights but it's just so cool!

Man, such nice places!! (maybe the pictures are too nice ;))
Jealous!

Love this build and I always get excited when I see you post new pics on flickr! Nice fan install too, so nice to have that extra help with your water temps when stopped/moving slow on the trail. The 37's are going to look badass on there! Interested to see what you do with gears...

With your question about 5.29's vs. 4.88's - Your going to see a higher RPM with the 5.29's vs. 4.88's at the same speed. I'm in the same dilema, lots of highway to get to the trails, I'm leaning 4.88's so it's more "economical" on those longer highway journeys. Besides you can always run the Marlin T-Case gears if you want a lower crawling ratio. I ain't competing in the Hammers though! haha

looks awesome man. yes the jump from 37s from 35s make the 80 look way better.
