1995 V-6 Pickup.

Idles rough. Smells like gas. Otherwise seems to run well. This is my sister's truck, but I do have access to it.

So I ran TE1 and E1, and came up with codes 14 and 26.

That all seems to point to EFI stuff to me, specifically I'm thinking of the mass airflow sensor. Tomorrow I'm planning on running to a junkyard to get another one to see if it makes a difference, but I just wanted to see what you guys think before I do that.

The other possible suspects are O2 sensor and Throttle Position Sensor. I have an '85 4-runner manual with directions to test those, but I've got nothing on the 3-point-slow.

Update:

the exhaust smells a little like gasoline, but it FEELS wet when I put me hand behind it, and it has visible white misty exhaust. Could a bad head gasket cause the O2 sensor to fail and throw these codes?

I don't have a compression tester here, and I'm not seeing bubbles in the radiator overflow bottle, and I don't see milky oil, but it just started acting up yesterday she said.

you should do a search on those codes before you just start throwing parts time and $$$ in the wrong direction.

I have.

14 goes to Airflow Meter / Manifold / Turbocharger Pressure Sensor
26 goes to Air /Fuel Ratio Rich Indicator

At least, that's the best I've found without an FSM around. To me those codes clearly indicate Mass Airflow Sensor, but the "wet" exhaust is something funny. On top of that, her coolant was low (I added a gallon or so) , even though I have no other reason to suspect her HG is going.

I thought that OBD codes were standardized across the different manufacturers, and the Chrysler OBD codes are close enough to these that I buy it, but the ones I find on the internets for GM codes are completely different.

So I decided to clean the mass airflow sensor and throttle body because it was easy. A little carb cleaner and a little scrubbing and it cleared everything up... Well, except I still think the exhaust is a lot "wet.". I compared it to the exhaust on the faux-lux (which is probably not a great comparison) and my hand was decidedly moist behind my sister's exhaust. Not sure what that's about, and I'm afraid it's tied to that low radiator, but we'll see.

I couldn't get it all THAT clean, so I'm sure the problem will reoccur. But a little cleaner and some work with my hands makes for a cheap fix to keep my sister's pickup running.

Update:

Code came back, but now it's just 26.

Mass Airflow Sensor: I'm looking at you..... Of course after counting the blips and cleaning the AFI only, the code is not returning for me. What do you want to bet that it will return for my sister?

Dan

Compression test.
If low, then block test.
If OK, then start checking computer inputs, like whether the O2 sensor is reading the Air/Fuel Ratio correctly. I know, without a FSM, it's kind of hard to know where and what to check.
Smelling like gas indicates the O2 may be correct in reading a rich exhaust, if it's that rich, you may need to start checking for things like leaking injectors, fuel pressure regulator, etc.
Has she had any work done to it lately?

i have the same issue with wet exaust, check the oil for a fuel smell. it could be the rings going bad. that is what mine is. just throwin it out there

ODB-II did the standardization, and even then...

There is a '93 FSM linked in the FAQ. It has the 3.slow engine in it. I don't know how much things changed from '93 to '95.
