not much out there for bolt-on performance. i'm not into it so i dont know much about it. i do know there is alot that can be done from turbo swapping, injection pump tuning ect. you can also do much damage so i leave that stuff to folks who think they need to beat the corvette to the next red light.

i'm perfectly happy with my little 37" tired 25mpg speed limit doing piggy.;)

haha, maybe a little more boost from the turbo but performance stuff usually leads to less service life because we tend to overdo it, and i want my rig as trouble free and long lived as possible.

All depends on how you use it. Don't really think a couple mods here or there are gonna cause a major loss of engine life unless you're just pouring the coals to it constantly. Not to mention the fact that if any mods done, lowered the life expectancy down to even 100,000 miles, how long would that get you? 15-20 years? At least!
Anyways, I just thought I'd ask. I'll do some searching around. I just like to know what I can do if I feel it's really necessary.

what you can do is over 300hp and 7-800 ft lbs. at least thats the most i have read about, dude does sand drags or something with it.

RHINO,

Awesome thread! I just found your update to it, and am glad that it has served you well all these years!

I would really like to be the first to do comprehensively document a 4bdt swap into an FJ40, and am considering doing it with an R150 like you have done. Any chance you could get me a closeish measurement from the back of the isuzu to the driveshaft mounting surface of your tcase? Any help would be great!

Do you know if the R150 is totally different than the R151? Or are they a similar tranny?

Thanks for being one of the pavers of the road that lays before me!

no problem buddy,,,

the overall length is 42"
the tranny itself is 26" with AA bellhousing and adaptor

everything i read says the 151 has a lower first gear and maybe slightly beefier bearings, otherwise they are the same tranny. the 151 is hard to find since it was only used in two models and sought after for the lower first gear. outside the USA the 150 was used in the turbo diesel land cruiser II, prado, hilux, surf ect. so i figured it was worth a try since they work overseas just fine and are cheap and easy to find.

the higher first gear is better on the road and since i have the doubler when needed its not an issue.

Great! Thanks for the measurements! That info really helps!

Parts availability is also very important to me, since if dreams were to come true, I would like to see a lot of the world in this 40. The fact that R150's were used everywhere is VERY good info!

exactly the main reason i chose the isuzu engine,,,, over the counter parts at any chevy dealer.

Do you have a part number for the Toybox that you used to adapt from the tranny to tcase? I was looking on Marlins site and I'm not seeing one on there. Did they put it together so it would work for application?

i dont have a part number. i had the doubler already installed before the swap so i ordered the parts i needed and built the hybrid myself. its a toybox with the mini truck front half and input gears. i dont remember excactly but i had to machine something a little bigger. marlin would know if you go that route.

It looks like Marlin may have quit building them from other talk I found on 'Mud. I will try to call them this week and find out for sure.

Just wanted to make sure I understood right:
  • 42" is from back of motor to driveshaft mounting flange on tcase
  • 26" is from back of engine to the back of the tranny where the toybox mounts.
Thanks RHINO!
