Engine won’t idle

Check that red to black wire in the last photo with the ignition ON. It should be energized.

The solenoid should click when you turn the ignition to run.

If you can keep it running at all, spray carb cleaner around the outside of the carb, base of the carb, the intake manifold, etc.

If it changes the way the engine sounds... increase/decrease in speed, you’ve found a leak. It may die... or run better. The same can be done with water, but I prefer carb cleaner.

“Replace the carb with a new one”... bah. :D you very well might need a Different mechanic. Or to rebuild it yourself. You’ve got lots to learn, but you’re in the right place. Ask lots of questions... we were all green once. You’ll learn, and 40s are good to learn from/on.

That carburetor has some booty fab going on. Looks like an 81/newer with the extended throttle shaft for the A/C compensator. Also the accelerator pump arm linkage has been modified, and not for the better. Same with the link for the choke step up rod.

Where in California are you?

Did some research on the Carb in my FJ - seems original

So searched on line and found what seems to be a match on eBay and chatted with some purchasers of the product and they confirmed the fit on their FJ’ s . I’ll update when I get it

You didn't talk to @65swb45 ? When I'm ready to tackle my carb, he is about one of the only I'd consider.

Mark is one of the high Priests of OEM carbs here on mud. A carb rebuild or finding the original and rebuilding can do wonders. I had very similar issue with my ‘78.

Got it - I had no clue. Well let me see what actually shows up ... I can always return it or have the original rebuilt as a back up ?

If Mark or Jim C rebuild your carb, it’ll be better than new... or so I’ve heard. I’ve not had a Toyota motor for 24 years so I don’t have firsthand experience, but in 12 years I’ve not seen any complaints about either.

I'm sorry to be this guy, but please, your vehicle is an FJ40 or a 40, an FJ is the new attempted rendition that could have been awesome but IMHO didn't quite get there.

Not following what you are laying down Bro

I think autocorrect go him... “sorry to say this guy, but”

Mentioned this because your use of FJ a few post earlier ... an FJ is a plastic truck that was meant to be a retro reincarnation of the fj40 :meh:

We call them fj40.... 40... tlc... even pos

Just not FJ

It’s bad enough to have people reverse their bezel... now toyota stuck the FJ on us and we have that as well to contend with :)
