I'm looking for emblem ideas for the rear upper tail gate (hatch) low edge. I'd leave naked but the emblem protects the paint, as it is the push point (strike zone) for closing the upper hatch.

I temporally plugged the holes, waiting for arrival of a Gold sombrero emblem. Give a very clean look IMHO.

I know... "GOLD"... it grew on me. Besides my license plate holders are gold with "LAND CRUISER". So I don't need the gold "LAND CRUISER" individual letters, which are difficult to clean between letters. The 03-07 are solid and color match 98-02, but IDK if they did in gold or fit the 98=02? It would certainly be a good size strike plate to protect the paint.

Also I've two scratch that are between where Toyota & Land Cruiser emblems were, might be nice to cover. You can't see in below picture as I've soften with touch-up paint and buffing, but is visible to the eye at 10'

Edit: I've received & attached the Gold Sombrero

I've always liked the look of the LAND CRUISER emblem/sign/plastic plate on the 80 series, and I bet it would go nicely on the 100...

Also, how did you go about removing the letters and plugging the holes? Looks very clean and well done.

Is your front sombrero also gold? Nothing irks my OCD more than mismatched emblems, center caps, window tints, rims, tires, etc. Anyone who considers themselves "detail oriented" will likely take exception. Whatever floats your boat, though.

Soapy high pressure water to remove grit. Then hot air heat gun (care taken not to over heat paint) to activate adhesive. Once warm to the touch, used sawing action to sliced away with 12lb fishing line. Again with soapy water to remove exposed grit. Cleaned remaining adhesive with Goo Be Gone, DX330 Acryli-Clean Wax & Greaser remover, Lacquer thinner and plastic scraper. Then DA buffer with Mequiar's 3" microfiber cutting pad & microfiber correcting compound, 6" DA microfiber finish pad & microfiber polish compound, 6" microfiber finish pad & finishing wax.
Final cleaning 153.webp

Filed holes with plastic barbed plugs that pull tight since barbs up to head, from ACE hardware. Didn't seal plug, just waxed so they're not water tight but will keep 99% of moisture out for a while.

Yep, front Sombrero that is. My fronts and back emblems have become faded & pitted with time. Was switching to Chrome, as Dealer can no longer get Gold. Then found on-line ebay resale who found & order some for me. They may be last of Gold OEM's around.

Same thing happened to the Black Pearl emblems that came with the truck. Became really faded and pitted over time with no easy (or cheap) way to replace. So I wound up going with plain chrome emblems and am quite happy. Sometimes you just gotta go with what's available. Good luck chasing down your gold emblem!

I did find gold, just not at Toyota Dealer. Black pearl on the other hand I could not find, which was my first choice. I suppose one could just paint any color, but I prefer factory coatings.

Now what I'm looking for is some sort of emblem or cover for the area our hands hits when closing upper rear hatch. Something different and cool. Something to go with the colors I have. Here a few ideas I've come up with so far:

emblem 4 WD.webp
Emblem 4 wheel drive.webp
emblem 50th.webp
Emblem Land Cruiser.webp
emblem LC 4wd club.webp

You could always use a clear protective wrap to protect that area. Love the classic red 4 emblem.

Clear wrap, good idea. I agree the classic red "4 Wheel Drive" emblem is cool.

A gold letter "50th Anniversary" would be sweet since mine is a 2001 (50th year of production). But would be small target for closing the hatch.

I really like it clean with nothing. You can use some 3m clear vinyl to protect the push point. Put The sombrero on and call it a day.

You could also just use the trim piece off of an early lx470 and go gold. Here is a pic for reference.

I do like the clean look.

Interesting idea on the LX470 piece. I bought a chrome one out of Dubai for $60, but have yet to see a gold one.

Wow, that's thorugh...but I expected nothing less from you! Thanks for sharing. And yes, that's the emblem I was referring to.

I've seen the eraser, just didn't have one at hand so used what was around. Whatever is used the trick is too not damage the paint.

I'll add:
As many have reported; paint looked damage (etched from acids of rain & organics and difference from sun damage) after cleaning. But I found paint cleared up with first pass of DA buffer with cutting compounded.
