Yeah if they were spring to retract it'd be a different thing.
I might dig into my mechanical one a bit today. Might have to make a spacer to lengthen the cable jacket. I suspect there's shrinkage lol

Finally got around to adjusting the drums on my 60, it's parking brake actually works pretty well for the moment, but I still prefer having rear discs even if it makes a parking brake a pain in the ass.
 
We use a spring applied hydraulic lift off emergency brake system on elevators to grab the hoist ropes.
A guy I work with got his finger in there and exploded the tip, bone and everything. The smoke and noise of that on a full load full speed application is impressive!

Elevators are frightening. Crazy amount of mass and torque. Very cool tool

Must be some kind of stupid TikTok thing going around. On this tour I went thru 5 hotels 2 states 2 countries and Alberta. In all the elevators there are now signs saying ‘Don’t jump up and down on the elevator, it will stop and require service.’ Sad that people need to be told.

No joke! you jump in there it will trap you until I wake up to all the buzzing of my phone, put on my clothes and drive into town from my house in the middle of the night..

Here’s why jumping will trap you in all traction elevators long story.

Basics:
All traction elevators have a centrifugally run safety device to stop the elevator in the event of an overspeed situation aside from the main brake, safety brake and even rope gripper devices.
The way the governor works is there’s a separate cable run in a loop to the car from a centrifugal governor that is set to lock it self at 150% of the elevators full contract speed.
(At 125% it electrically will stop elevator but failing that)
That governors dogs will lock yanking on the cable down to the cab of the elevator which has wedged devices that will grab the guide rails stopping the car within a couple feet if not instantly,

The reason not to jump in an elevator is that very safety governor.

If your in the the cab jumping while the elevator is running that device is spinning at 100% contract speed and if you were to jump and cause it’s dogs to flick out just enough to reach that 125% it will shut the elevator off instantly trapping you mid hoistway. Happens all the time late at night, mostly drunks that don’t have time hold at that beer in till we get there.

DO NOT let any cable, power cord, dog leash, catheter drape across the threshold where the doors can close and the elevator can leave and travel to other floors stretching whatever is caught in the door till it breaks because the elevator is stronger.

In Sweden it's pretty common to find elevators without internal doors so you always see these signs :

I’m surprised household machines don’t have the same warnings. A few years back my son climbed into our old dryer that we’d moved out of the way when the washer died. He was about 5’4” at the time and a friend dared him.

Fortunately, the machine wasn’t connected and he climbed into our dryer and out without injury.
 
Thinking about electric Ebrakes I have decided they are not for me.

They either fail on meaning when not powered they are actively braking or others cannot be applied without power, also crap.

The reasons I don’t like that are:
One, you won’t be able to bump start a vehicle with a dead battery.
Two, One time my fuseable link cracked from too manny flexes and i lost power on the highway. In the case of the failure on I wouldn’t have been able to roll my truck off the highway to fix it.
Three, if you’re having a problem such as a solenoid failure and in my experience solenoids do fail, you won’t be able to lift the brake to get home without disassembling it.
In the case of the Tesla version. The brake is actuated with a motor momentarily turning a screw to put pressure on a pad. Your reason one is valid. If you apply the brake and then kill your battery, you'll be immobile until you apply power to release the brake. A 12v power tool battery back-fed though the cig lighter would do it. Your second scenario wouldn't apply since the brake is only set by applying power. The brake remains in the position it was set when power was last applied. Third, relays aren't necessary required. It could easily be set up to run with a 2P2T manual switch. Operationally, I can live with the drawbacks but time will tell how these things will like life under a dirty Land Cruiser.
 
On the ebrake subject, I added a .5" spacer to the jacket of my ebrake cable at the dash end. It now engages at the middle of the handles travel, and locks up solid with just a light yank on the handle.

Haven't tried it on much of a hill yet, but it's 100% better than it was, so I suspect it'll be fine.

Obviously needed that spacer from the get go.
