I've seen '69 FJ40's with round fender lights and some with square lights....can someone tell me when they went to the square lights on the '69 or were the square lights for a specific model?

Probably a noob question but how did you tell it was a November model?

Are there any other places on the frame to check the serial number?

My '69 may be a '68. The plate on the inner fender wall has a number of 57184.....which could be sort of a good thing since I was born in April of '68, except it's a bad thing since it's been registered since 1976 as a '69.

The reason I ask is becasue the frame near the bumper only says FJ40 and no other numbers behind it.

Any other ways to tell the difference from a '68 adn a '69??

The bell crank changed during 69. The carb switched to a two barrel during 69. Hub caps switched during 69. The front turnals switched during 69. Refectors replace with marker lights on the sides during 69. Running boards switched from rubber pad cover to diamond steel during 69. Parking lights in the bib were dropped during 69. Not sure the jump seats may have switched to single bolt instead of two pre leg during 69. The rear bracket for the back bow on teh soft tops may have switchfrom four to two bolts during 69. Pads on the hood for the windshield changed during 69. Probably other things too.

The 69 model did start the same as the 68. 3/69 is a key date. The as far back as Toyota's parts books go.

My 69 has a plaque inside the drivers door frame.
Old style running boards, square front signals, bib lights, reflectors on the sides front and back, odd ball carb that no one else seems to have.
Shows the month made. Sorry crappy pic.

The first picture you posted was a Toyota advertisement for a 1968 model, and had the rare orange front apron reflectors that ran thru 10/69, to conform with the new Federal Safety requirements that were established that year. In my research, the round turn signal lights ended in the '68 model year, and were replaced with the rectangular signals in 1969 and ran thru 12/1974.:cheers:Brendon

I would interested in where you found this information. I have seen more than a couple 69 that had the round turnals. Plus the earlier chrome hub caps. The smaller tail light also changed early in the 69 model year.

You can add the driveshaft bolts/pinion flange change to the otherwise pretty comprehensive cutoff list John provided.

FTR, I am also of the understanding the turn signals changed in January of '69.

Here is my 69 cruiser i just picked up. I have a question though. Where does the green wire that comes off the condensor go to? If you can take a pic of your distributor under the cap it would help me greatly. FYI my green wire was just flopping around and i put it where it is.

Also does your 69 distributor look like mine?

Is the 1 barrel carb on a 69 is that a good car or junky?

Thanks

Matt

I have frame number 65430 and the vin plate says Jan/1969. If you look at Spector data 3/1969 was the change to two barrel etc.. My research shows that the month demarcation was not in stone. All my parts support a 3/1969 cruiser and when I visited Japan in the 1980s I was told that cruisers built arount these change dates sometimes had old parts and sometimes new ones based on availability. I have the square turn signals and Orange side reflectors.

I have frame 58914 and it is registered as a 69. It had 1 bbl carb, old style oil filter, split hood, round reflectors, vacuum 4wd, and something that hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread, 9mm brake lines. Also the lights on the bib.
