lc69hunter, I see you are in Tucson. So am I. What does your vin tag say for production date?

His tag is too early to sport a month of production, as it is actually a 1968 build date. Older than my Oct 68 build date on RUFTOYS.

Are there any other places on the frame to check the serial number?

My '69 may be a '68. The plate on the inner fender wall has a number of 57184.....which could be sort of a good thing since I was born in April of '68, except it's a bad thing since it's been registered since 1976 as a '69.

The reason I ask is becasue the frame near the bumper only says FJ40 and no other numbers behind it.

This is very common, I have a 1961 mfg date registered as a 62. The US registration year is the year the dealer decided to put it on their lot to sell back then. So yours was made in Japan in 68, but by the time it got to the dealer they decided to sell it as a 69. I have heard vehicles from the 50's and earl 60's have even had a 2 or more years separation due to the vehicle sitting in some port or storage lot before making it to the dealer. As for parts the MFG date via the frame serial number is more important then the year on the title or the stamped metal ID plate, especially if it is close to changes like this.

I have frame 58914 and it is registered as a 69. It had 1 bbl carb, old style oil filter, split hood, round reflectors, vacuum 4wd, and something that hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread, 9mm brake lines. Also the lights on the bib.
lc69hunter, my 7/69 is exactly line yours (except I have never checked the brake lines). I didn't know the reflectors were that uncommon.

The model and production have been difference for as long as I can remember. Today's date is 10/14/2010. If you go a car dealership see how many 2011 models are available. Probably more then 2010. The first Tundra was sold in may of 1999. The earliest model year for a Tundra is 2000. You can't say a vehicle is a model year just by production date.

On your 61 does it have Front and rear arm rest for the jump seats? Does it have large gas cap like the FJ25? Those two things have been on every 61 model I have seen. The hole for the air intake on the driver's apron was dropped mid model year.

I do not have the original jump seats to my knowledge, not sure about the gas cap size, it is the one with the acorn thing on it that matches the old hub caps.

The jumpseats have a bracket on the front of the rear wheel well that the arm mounted to. Same mounting as the FJ25 only the arm rests were lower. The FJ25 arm rest was the same height as the back of the seat. The gas cap didn't have the acorn on it. They were either locking or have the TEQ stamped into. The cap was much larger then the later FJ40 gas cap. It almost filled the whole opening for the filler neck.

I've seen '69 FJ40's with round fender lights and some with square lights....can someone tell me when they went to the square lights on the '69 or were the square lights for a specific model?
