Early 80's with lockers?

Didn't meen to stoke a fire. Maybe everyone can enlighten me on the early 80. But from what I can see..
The extra weight of the 80 taxes the 3FE and the semi floating rear axle. It's brakes are marginal at best. I give the nod to the 80 for the coil suspension. What else is there? I'm ok with being wrong(I am all of the time) just want to know why :)

The coils are a big deal in my book. Coils that ride nice from the factory and even better with OME. For about $700 you can lift an 80 3.5" and have it ride and drive nice. For $1600 you can OME a 60 or 62 and it still doesn't ride as nice as an 80. One could argue that the fulltime 4wd is better than parttime. But really this is just a preference. Less rear overhang, a bit longer wheelbase, wider axles, quieter interior, available sunroof, US spec'd rear sliding windows, 3rd seat which most of them spend their lives stowed in a garage or basement or atttic, these are just off the top of my head. The real pluses come when you get to the FZJ80 and you get more power and the diff lock option, rear discs and fullfloater. The thing I think a 62 might have over an 80 is that it has classic lines, more cargo space, better front speakers, and the mirrors never seem to get the shakes. The 60 would have simplier mechanicals than either a 62 or any 80 in the US which could be a definite plus. But you have to deal with the leaf springs

I never get confused for a mall Cruiser in my 91, people generally stare or point. But then again maybe that was because I got caught picking my nose or something? :flipoff2:

My original point was that for what FJ62s go for you could get into a 93+ 80. This would be for someone looking to purchase not someone who already has the Cruiser. An early FZJ80 is better value than a 62 for someone buying because you can get 4 wheel disc brakes , fullfloater rear, diff locks, Fulltime 4wd, more power, and it is much cheaper to lift it. Other adds might be sunroof and leather if that floats your boat. Whatever you purchase a 62 for basically you have to add about $1000 more for the lift and add another $18-1900 for lockers. So you could pay almost 3k more initially for an FZJ80 and still come out ahead over purchasing a 62. :doh:

If your buying an FJ80 don't bother with the sunroof. I have one in mine and it's PITA because it leaks when it rains hard enough. I'm fed up with it and don't want to pay to get it fixed so I'm just gonna put silicon around it to seal it up for good...I never use it anyway.

It will be a long and lonely wait to find one without a sun roof. Almost all 80's that came into the US were so equipped. I have seen a grand total of 2 in the flesh that did not have sunroofs.

That's a rather rash solution to a relatively minor problem that is prevelant on many 80s. I believe 15 minutes spent searching the archives and 1 or 2 hours fixing the problem would be a better solution and would retain the function of your sunroof. But I'm not 17 so what do I know. :D

Yip - the 80's did have front and rears (or both like mine) as a toyota factory option......

And being late and on your third post, the '91 came too early to the party to receive an electric locker - a party gift that first arrived in the US on '93 models. So now the question's been answered.

Likely someone slapped a later rear axle in it.

Just to be clear, you are wrong :flipoff2: (at least partly), FJ80's (91-92) do NOT have factory front/rear lockers, FZJ80's(93+) DO have optional front/rear lockers. :whoops:

Funny guys - but my 92' 80series does have (like many I have seen) factory fitted front/rear diff locks - in fact I have seen many 91's also with them.

Maybe me should remember that fact that US models may differ from Models imported from Japan. :D

My 91 with cloth didn't have a sunroof. Originally purchased in KS. But it's the only one I've ever seen without. Another strange feature compared to the others I've seen - no speakers in the front doors. OK, enough worthless cruiser trivia.
