Not necessarily I half A$$ prepped and only scuffed up the paint with a scotchbrite pad and whipped with lacquer thiner. And I had a few issues with a couple edges due to the extremely hot day I applied the liner and could barely get a coat done before I had to do the next coat. And after fixing an edge on the tailgate and having it overlap into the door jambs my edges have held up fine over 5 years. I would say the tape job is the most important part.

Mine was super easy. I used electrical tape and masking tape to edge and scuffed the paint with a red sanding block. Its been a couple years for mine and it has held up incredibly well.
