I have an 81' that I need to get a new skid plate/ transfer crossmember for. But here is the deal, I plan on putting on a doubler setup in the kind of near future (mayber 6 months), but need a crossmember now. Currently stock setup.

Does the general design of the aftermarket doubler crossmembers allow for the use of just a single transfer, no doubler? (i.e. all-pro, marlin, sky, etc.) I don't want to buy a new crossmember just to have to buy another one later.

2x on talking to Bud @ Budbuilt. I'm using his single T-case crossmember/skid plate. I couldn't have built one for what the Budbuilt one cost me. The big plus was the extra clearance it gave me.

A budbuilt skidplate will fit a single t-case. But, there may be enough deflection for the drain plug to his the crossmember, and there is not a hole for the drain plug. Bud does have a .25" spacer to keep the t-case from hitting the crossmember.

snailwagon...i know the stock cross member and mount are crap but just an upgrade to a better mount may resolve some or any issues you may currently have. Like, the shifter flopping from side to side while in low range. Look into upgrading the mount and then when you do your doubler all you'll need to get is a skid plate/cross member and the mount you have will work. just more of my .02

Is it just a matter of the stock mount being too soft and allowing the cases to flex and hit the crossmember? Ask Bud to get you set up with one of our SD transfer case mounts, or give me a call.

Pretty much. I run one of your mounts, and its VERY close without the spacer.

BTW: I REALLY like your mount. My only improvement I want to make is to replace the bolts that bolt it to the transfer case with studs and stover nuts. The awesome part of your mount is that I can drop the t-case mount off by the bushings, and leave the upper bracket still attached to the t-case. Thus, studs will work, where as they won't work with a stock mount. Any chance you could make a retrofit kit?

I kept having issues with the bolts loosening up (mixture of leaking t-case and very loose engine mounts). Until finally, the nuts loosened up enough, I stabbed the gas, and it stripped out the threads in the t-case.

My friend had an identical issue with the dana 18 in his jeep (350 hp engine, with 37" tires) and when he did the studs, it solved all his issues.
