Adding power steering to my "77 Fj40 and have read about a bolt on pulley. Is this the way to go (and where do you get one) or should I try to find a fj double pulley?

Stock 1977 2F engine would already have a double pulley.

How about some pictures of what you have?

The plate on the drivers side says Mar 77. Here are the pics - single pulley.

as poser said should already be a double pulley/would you have a pic of the whole motor passenger side looks like a nice rig so far.

It looks like it could be a F engine. I believe the bracket just beyond the crank pulley in the 1st pic is for the stock location of the alternator on a F engine

The engine number on the passenger side starts with 2F so guessing its a 2F.
When I bought it the bottom end of the motor had been redone, the pulley was already on, but it wasn't in the vehicle. This is a toy in a box meaning most bolts and components were apart and in boxes when I took over what the PO started.
Pics to show where I'm at. Hoping to start engine by the holidays - if I can get this pulley dilemma figured out. Is there a bolt on pulley available - would be much simpler. All help appreciated.

Yes, if the engine number starts with "2F", it's a 2F...just about any later F or 2F, perhaps as early as a 1972 from Ca when the air pump started, should have a 2 groove crank pulley that will bolt on. Be aware that some 2-groove crank pulleys will have one wide groove and one skinny groove, later 2-groove crank pulleys will have 2 wide grooves.
You could probably find one of the 2-groove crank pulleys from a private individual through the classifieds, or from one of the usual suspect vendors here on 'Mud. I got one from Mark A. ...

My '78 came with a single groove pully. It was stock without PS. The alternator is on the drivers side.

When I rebuilt it I put on a two groove pull in case I ever do a PS mod.

You have a Canadian spec truck which would be configured as you have stated.

USA 2F engines would have had a two row pulley set up and an alternator on the right side of the engine.

Bang on with the Canadian version. I have the double pulley for the water pump and the setup to move the alt. just need the dual crank pulley. Thanks again

Check with Georg at Valley Hybrids for the crank pulley.

Sure, I have the one I pulled off my 2F when I found a double-wide-groove pulley...

I think he needs one with two equal size grooves.

Northern-
Post a pic of your WP pulley.

Well, you don't NEED a double wide groove pulley to run the power steering...it's just better. That's why I have a wide/skinny getting rusty in the basement and a double-wide in my rig. I did run the rusty pulley for many years with the saginaw P/S though...it will work.

Here are some pics.
The pump - believe it is from a mini truck - was in one of my many boxes.
From passenger side looks like alt will line up with front grove of waterpump, and crank aligns with the front groove of water pump. So would it work to run the alt off the water pump and the crank to the water pump and power steering pump? Or are things out of alignment?

Here is a picture of my '78 with GM PS pump using the same dual water pump pulley which lets me run the same width belts on both pulleys. I also have a three pulley crank off of an '87 FJ60 that was used for the A/C which runs on a larger diameter pulley with a narrow belt. The three pulley crank will also work. I could not find a good photo of the dual crank pulley other than what you see from the alternator/passenger side. I do have a good photo of the three pulley crank on the engine.
