The red wire on the top of the lamp socket is the only it would work. If your using door switches that make ground then the switching base has to be the ground. While I don't own a 82 I have a tub and frame with other parts. I plan to up my 79 to almost options including the dome light. The brackets on the A pillar will had to be made or removed from a 82 or later. maybe some other vehicle. The 82 and later dome light with the door switch option is no longer available. The long bullet door switches I believe are still available from Toyota. A picture of the door will show how the door has a section stamped out to mate to the door switch.

Very cool! I like having all the small things work in these trucks too. On the list of things I've gotten running are:
1) Center console w/ heater
2) Carb cooling fan
3) Windshield squirters
4) Brake/ Seatbelt light
5) Dome Light
6) Low speed on front heater

What exactly do you need a picture of? I know Pearly wants the stamped piece height and dimensions.

All these plus listening to ball games on the AM radio is my favorite.

The stamped piece on the door is the only thing I have to figure out. A picture with measurement would be great.

Since mine is a 79 and won't be stock I may add a second dome light on the passenger's side that operates off the switch on the other dome light which I was able to find one off a 82. For my 79 I plan on using the later split case and rear axle with the hand brake. center console with the rear heater. Two piece steering column with the correct steering wheel. Then the later glove box door. Not sure what other changes between 79 and 82? Spring I know changed but what else?

Okay, I'll see what I can measure for you guys. Well, right off the top of my head I know the '82 has all the crazy emissions components, but I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. The bezel/bib changed as well. I think you have all the good parts of the later models right there, the '79 has the front discs right?

Not sure emissions were that much better in 79. The bib/bezel was same in 79 so I already have the correct ones but also have spares. Disc brakes started with the 76 model, the 79 model had larger knuckles. The brake booster and master were also different after 8/80.

For not stock, I'd put a strip of LEDs all around the perimeter of the hard top channel. With white MonstaLiner inside the cap it would be as bright as you would ever need.

Aw come on Eddy! Where is the fun in that?

That's what I was thinking, the door switch and the led's

Or for a softer light, a strip of electro-luminescent wire.

instrument lighting upgrade.

I could not get over the poor illumination of the stock lighting.
Wired up 14" LED self adhesive backed strip to the head light switch allowing dimming feature. They work great and not too much "Bling".

No LEDs for me on a FJ40. If I add a second dome light it will be stock or close to stock. If I want something I can use LEDs in it wouldn't a vehicle that is over thirty years old. If I'm driving old school I still want it to be old school. Any mods are period correct. I was able to pick up a old bullbar cheap. To me the new style ARB belongs on a new jeep.

I put a loop of EL wire inside my cluster, also hooked up to the dimmer rheostat:

It's completely invisible and indistinguishable from stock, until you drive it at night and can actually see all your gauges!

I like that way better. Who sell that set up?
firestopper

amaurer here on mud sold me my kit, he's still here but he's not making the kits any more. :(

Hope this helps! If I need to get more precise measurements I can!

If you would just pry that part off and mail it to me I could measure it myself. :hillbilly:

If you have an alarm system with door switches you can piggy back your ground off of the switches which would also offer the ability to have the light come on with the rear door.
