Diesel swap - 2L-T into 22R pick up

:bang::bang:Ugh, I think I am too far into this to stop now :bang::bang:
I keep wondering if ignorance would have been bliss at least for a year or 2...
...even though that would have never happened.
Radd and Ateb don't have any used crankshafts, still waiting to hear back from Australia about the 2 used I found ($200 each), but they haven't returned my emails. Depending on what Steve finds, the next step is smoke signals, voodoo dolls and a Ouija board

Well I might have a solution, came across a guy that has 2 2L engines, both rotate, are a little rusty on the outside, complete with everthing, for $500 each. It might be a risk but I should be able to inspect the oil pump gears at least and I'd have a bunch of spare parts.
The other one is a guy that might have a crank for sale, I'll know tomorrow.

Yea, I get it, and it will likely take me longer than that.
Tomorrow I'll see about the crankshaft the "other" guy might have, and if that fails I'll likely take one of the other engines for sale, as long as he allows me to pull off the front pulleys to inspect the gears on the oil pump :D

From now on I've upgraded the model of the vehicle, it is the Toyota NPT truck.

You know Mat, I hear the least painful fix for those broken 2lt trucks is the good old 22R :)

I second Jeff's suggestion of a 3B swap, would be a good project. Otherwise, think I saw there was also a fairly cheap dead surf you could part out, if you need more parts.

The 3B I have is a mint engine with low kilometers and is not going into this truck. That one I'm saving for something else. The 3B out of the blue truck has almost 600,000kms and has a fair bit of blow by, it is tired, but working. I would have to rebuild that. $1200 rebuild kit, plus machining. Also, it is a very heavy engine, in a small pickup that weights very little, it is a bit much. The little torsion bars would hate me and I am not doing a conversion for a solid axle. The 22R is great (really, it is, I've had them before, I've rebuilt 4 of them), but it is giving me problems and it is not the platform I want, and I hate gassers. So I'm stuck with what I started, which is not a bad engine...normally...but in this case the truck and everything around it has been a never ending uphill battle with a side of BS. Everything I did went to the worst possible case scenario. I'm guessing the Land Cruiser gods got pissed at me for buying this damn thing. Oh well, enough of that.
Back on track, I will likely buy one of the 2 available 2L engines, going to try for around $300-400, and check which one is in better condition. Then I will likely sell the head, pump and other stuff that is not compatible with mine, and keep the block as a spare in case this one goes. If I am lucky, I will get most of it back, but I'm also going to be resonable about it.

I'm going to use that quote at work... ;p

I'd ask for a percentage of royalties but there are none :)

Well....F&%K!
I popped by Coquitlam Auto and talked to their machine shop, showed them the pictures of the cylinder block, and even just by looking at the photos it's pretty much as bad as I thought. I can bring the block in for a look but realistically if it's not dead, it's likely damn close to it soon. There are cooling passages near by and the crack will likely only spread further. Also, I didn't see this before because everything was fairly clean, but after it sat for a few days and the oil dripped down a bit I saw it was catching on a tiny hairline crack on the bottom of one of the sleeves. It's a horizontal crack, running around, about 3/8" from the bottom of the (now confirmed by the machine shop) sleeve. So in time it could possibly break off (it already must have started due to the sharp edges in certain places) and then get into the mix and do all kinds of damage - maybe.
Essentially it means that if I'm lucky, and find a crankshaft, and put it in, I can keep my fingers crossed and maybe get some life out of it.....
I bought the other 2L I found on CL... :bang: Got it for $450, and I get to chose which one of the 2 I want. :bang:
I just can't catch a break on this stupid swap. So now I am looking at a head gasket (because the heads need swapping since they are different and mine was rebuilt), at least I get to clean those damn valves now and polish the ports.
I spent most of the day swearing.
Now I get to find out which pistons are better, which rings, new rings, new bearings, if needed, etc, etc.
If I walk away now, I might break even by selling the parts but I am still left with a 22R that's giving me nothing but problems. So, might as well shovel deeper in the s***

Did you kick a black cat, walk under a ladder and smash a mirror or something? I use to think i had the worst luck but man you are taking that prize.

Sorry to hear about all the issues!!

Is the 2L the same block and crank as the 2LT? If it is I would hope the pistons are the same too? If so just lightly hone the good 2L block, put in new rings and bearing and be done, slap you rebuilt head on and off to the races (not literally).

Judging by the rest of the quality of the rebuild do you want to trust that head though
Without having it tested

Oh I'm not trusting the head, I'm pulling it off and checking it myself. If it isn't cracked anywhere, then it's going on. If it is, guess I have a 2L engine that is getting a bunch of 2LT parts, including a turbo, put on it. In either case, I'm building one engine out of 2.

WOW! you are one brave lad to take on that problematic swap. I wish the Landcruiser gods cast some favorable karma your way.

And the build continues. I hope I get a break with this soon. Got the other engine, rotates freely, the crank looks good on the front, the keyway and oil pump gears look great. I'm hoping to have time in a week or two to strip it down and compare blocks.

I liked the clean blue one, hopefully you have better luck with this one... If you need help I wont wear white this time ;)

I'd just drop that new one right in with a turbo........no worries........

Looks like its been sitting for a long time, glad to hear it turns freely. I would offer to help some time but I'm having enough issues getting free time to work on my engine rebuild as it is.
