Its how mine came back. I had the engine back from the engine reconditioner and I just set the timing gears running off the crank as per manual and added the pump, aligned the marks and it fired up straight away once the air was out of the injector lines.. Injection shop said they could make some minor adjustments if it smoked etc but it was perfect.

The part where you align the marks after putting the pump back on is the part where you're timing the pump...right?

This is what I did initially and it worked fine. After realizing the error in my ways through this thread, I went back with the gauge and found timing retarded by .2mm or so. The pump is so touchy that moving it slightly will put you out of spec, so the marks really aren't all that great if you want to get it right. But it ran fine.

From memory there was a mark on top of the pump flange and another on the timing gear case. The shop that did my pump said they rarely need more than a mm of adjustment over the lifespan of the engine.
When I had my other 1HZ injectors rebuilt and pump checked, they also left the marks in the same place at 200000klms.

@HillCountryTX

How is your new IP working out for you so far? I managed to get one of those cover plates from MD for the ACSD delete.

Hi @FJ73Texas

The new IP is working out great. We went from getting about 13-15mpg (U.S. Gallons) with the old IP (with ~170k klms on it) to about 16 - 18 mpg with the new IP. It is MUCH quieter, smoother, and was a welcome improvement. I never knew how loud/rough the old IP was. As a reminder, I did an IP swap, so I purchased a reconditioned IP from Cruiser Addiction (@Akella ) and had @SteveJackson 's crew at Land Cruiser's Direct do the install and timing. The mechanic that did the timing said he didn't have to time the IP at all...that it came just fine out of the box. It tells me that whomever is doing their IP rehab work definitely knows what they are doing :)

It was worth the added cost, as our truck was only down for 3.5 days total for an IP swap, plus a complete replacement of all the radiator/coolant hoses, and a valve clearance check. An excellent turnaround time if you ask me. Hope this helps!

That is what I am looking forward to when I get mine installed. I got word that my rebuilt one has shipped already from Japan and cleared customs in Chicago.

My old one next to the rebuilt one

This is how I thought it was always done. Ive never heard of anyone in Australia getting dial gauges out to adjust the timing on a pump after a rebuild on a denso rotary ip

I only hope I am that lucky but I have asked a friend to help me with the timing once I get it all back in.

I only hope I am lucky enough for a “timed out if thbox”

I was watching a video of an American farmer last night removing his rotary pump from his John Deere tractor and he was expecting his pump to come back plug and play after its rebuild.
A distributor pump is similar to an electrical distributor on a petrol engine. Once the engine is at TDC (or wherever the specs say) ,you drop the distributor in and it should start and run.
