I miss my 4BT powered trucks. The only reason I sold the last one was due to the 700r4 tranny. It was the weak link in an otherwise bulletproof truck. If I would have kept it, I would have swapped in a manual (H41/42, H55, or NV4500).

Yes, it's noisy and unrefined, but that low end torque is addicting!

Mods you should do if not already done:
  • Add sound deadening under the carpet and at the firewall (like what others have said).
  • Fluid filled mounts help with vibration at idle, but it is still there. I bumped up the idle a little which helped.
  • Make sure you have the gearing right. I swapped in a 3.70 gears that helped keep the RPM's down (the 4BT has a pretty narrow RPM band.
  • Install a smaller turbine housing for faster turbo spooling.
LOL! Beno is a serial 4BT hater.

I have owned one of these (not a 4bt, but somebody else's project, not very civilized and got passed around among owners, spent most of it's life on craigslist). Thankfully the guy who bought it from me actually spent the time and money to turn it into what it should have been to start with.

I read the first post and thought to myself "4bt + 700r4 = that's gotta be terrible to drive" IMO the 700r4 is the most uncivilized craptastic transmission that ever hit the mass market. Combine that with what is widely regarded as the most NVH engine available, and it sounds pretty rough to me. If I were keeping this beast, the first thing I would start researching is swapping for a nv4500.

I'll leave this here for a little inspiration:

For Sale: - 1995 Toyota Landcruiser w/ 4BT Cummins 3.9L Turbo Diesel Conversion, Interior Sleeping

I hope you do keep it and sort through the issues :)

I live in West Michigan. Most of my trips are to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am in Paradise MI now snowmobiling, pretty much the same trails we drive in the summer.

What's the latest. It the tractor Motor growing on you?

I finally remembered to take a picture of the vibration damper position. Dis regard the loose wires and what not. Doing a head, pistons, bearings and what not on mine.

You'll have yo make sure you have room in front of the main pulley. The damper portion sits out in front and is a larger diameter. Right where the front crossmember is

A stock 6BT with stock toyota tranny will get 20 mpg, the 4bt is a slug for a 80 go 6bt be happy hey FNG :flipoff2:. enjoy your new toy  I could of had a 6bt :hillbilly:
