Felt like Fall this morning. Tried out a few different trails that I haven’t ridden in a couple years, contiguos to one of my longer loops. So, 14.5 miles with nearly 900 feet of climbing. Somewhere in the last 2 miles, a dog chasing me, forced me into flight mode. That dog would not give up until the technical descent. I blame the owners. Dogs must be under control in the woods. Clearly, this one wasn’t. They’re probably still looking for him…

Man, I was tearing up the trail to get away from Mr. Chompers.

Good ride (35km) today, with some nice climbing in it. Really quick run out (first 5km were about on par with riding the road bike!) aided by a good tailwind... but because it was out and back, I had the headwind on the way back!

Really see the yellow/orange here, which I've not been able to get before:

Hot,hot, hot! Borderline, unrideable with the humidity. Did the 11 miler, but was on the bike, rolling at 7:00 am. By 7:35, I was a sweat bucket. Was able to keep a good pace, faster than last week with same conditions.

Most of the ride is in the woods, so I really didn’t have to worry about heat prostration.

Good ride all in.

You say that (i.e., not worried about heat in the woods), and it is true, but the closest I ever came to croaking due to heat was riding shaded trails in Bentonville in low-90s temps in June a few years ago. Low 90s isn't hot if you drink when you are thirsty. But it was just so ****ing humid there that sweating had no cooling effect on the core.

It's been entirely unpleasant here in central NC as well. I just cannot get up and moving early, so I usually start around 9:30 or 10 when the temps are in the low 80's and humidity is the worst. :( However, this has forced me to change my riding style for the better: take it easy, keep cadence around 75-low 80's. Finding I can still do 90 minutes or more and actually recover so much faster. Just come home soaked head to toe, literally, but not gassed.

So, after 29 years of mountain biking in New England, I picked up my first case of Lyme disease. I suppose it was bound to happen eventually. I am pretty rigorous on the tick check post ride, but this fawker bit me where I can’t really see or reach. Lower left shoulder blade. Eight days ago, a huge rash showed up. Didn’t think too much of it, until the second one showed up. Doc said that’s a sign the virus is now active. No symptoms, but the rash. On antibiotics now, bloodwork tomorrow. Dang.

Hot metric today. Started out fast. But who starts a ride going straight up a hill?

Quick 20km loop out to the mountain bike trails on the big yellow bike. Worked out I didn't have the clutch engaged on the mech, so got a load of chain slap last ride(s) and have chipped the paint on the stay :(

3 other Discoveries:
1) Seat post still slips
2) Saddle clamp knurls are knackered, even torqued properly
3) I don't like man-made trails, especially when didn't feel like they wanted to flow.

Ride got curtailed as the saddle ended up a bit skywards, and the seat post dropped about 5mm over the hour and a bit ride. Think the solution is to give up (post was only AU$40, but it was a good experiment with the adjustable set back on it) and get a different seat post and start again... I'd like about 20-25 mm seat back, and the seat post not to slip...
