Did you do anything to the canvas yet? Seam sealer? Might be a good idea before the rain starts...I'd check with Johnny C

Ok the 40 runs fine... now it`s time for a little trip
the panamericana from Alaska to Fire land / Argentina ....

... these german guys did it in 2008/9 in an old green 1952 VW beetle

52000 km / 16 month without any problems ,
Panamericana im alten grünen VW Käfer
( only german text but some nice pictures , enjoy)

He is still not shure of the engine , I think I would be listening to every sound and checking the gages all the time to.
