And if it blows in the wilds of Wyoming with wife and kids? And I have to get it back to TN. How much is that worth. No way am I going to put more than 10k per year on it. I rarely leave the house!

If it blows in the wilds of Wyoming a GM warranty wouldn't help you too much any how....at least not quickly! :) You'd get it towed to the nearest GM Dealer and it would either sit for weeks waiting for a spot in their schedule to open at worst and at the best it would be 7+ days for parts and labor time for a fix. So just waiting on it in town to get fixed could get expensive in a heart beat. Or you could spend $1000 and get it shipped back to TN and save $1500+ in hotels and food waiting + rent a car and be at the same spot.

^ I say that because I broke down in Billings, MT this year and it was redic expensive

My particular crate engine's warranty was 2 years OR 50k miles, whichever comes first.

What are you going to do if ANY motor blows out there?

Stripped to the frame is not progress enough for you? :( Dropped the frame off this morning to be blasted. Doing all the dirty work now, nothing pretty. Using Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black & Primer on frame and axles.

I understand the desire for a crate motor when you are building essentially a new truck. I don't think either direction is a distinct
advantage when it comes to it blowing up in East Bumf*k. Either way you are in need of a tow and in scramble mode getting your family home.

People build their trucks for diff. Reasons. some think an EMP is going to hit and built to suit. Some want a shiney new powerplant to eat breakfast from. I love it ALL!!

Its true that any sort of breakdown is going to suck, especially when far from home or far from ANYTHING. Hello...AAA, yes I am in a safe place away from traffic. My concern is more about doing everything possible to reduce the likelihood of that happening in the first place. I have driven GM vehicles 200 to 300k with little problem. These were new route vehicles, some of which I did the break in miles. I dont feel the same way about a used engine that was likely involved in some sort of "crash". There are a lot more unknowns in that situation. I tried to go the budget route before when having my engine rebuilt. Instead of taking the time and money to send it to someone like Trollholes, I went with what seemed to be a "good deal". Now I have spent that $ plus what it takes to get a dependable power train in my truck. Its one thing to be broken down knowing there is not much more I could have done. But another berating myself for not just doing it right in the first place. If anyone has a 5.3 from a Tahoe that was driven off the lot and totaled before hitting 1200 miles, I'll take it!

Can a frame be painted with the body on? Or is that not ideal?

I got my combo for $3k from eBay with forty (40) miles on the engine... 8 years, and 120k+ miles later still going strong with Zero issues..(knock on wood).. however the tranny had to be rebuilt once already......

Always great to see engine swaps come up and read up on them..

It's eBay... so take it with a grain of salt.
I got pics of the donor and odometer.. Reading at 40 miles, but both the engine, tranny, cats and harness looked brand new.. The story was the buyer rolled the Silverado the same day he got it after leaving the bar.....

Rear axle down to bare metal, frame is off being blasted.

I don't know if there is a general rule. I think much of it depends on the shop etc. For instance, if mine was a large shop and had a body shop the body and front clip would be getting done at the same time as the frame work. But that is not the casse as I am a one man operation so I'll be doing all the chassis and suspension work, put the body on, do the swap and then take it off to the body shop and then the upholstery shop after that.

This process works for me in that I do not have to worry about messing up new paint or interior while doing everything else.

Wreckers are required to keep records of VIN# at least in my state. I was able to use the VIN to verify the mileage at time of total loss.

Holy smoke! 40 miles? I thought I was asking a lot for under 1200. Do you know the story? Any way to verify?

Frame came back from blasting. A bit of wire wheel work to take down the high spots and remove scale from blasting and one coat of Eastwood Extreme black primer. Another coat of primer tomorrow and then two top coats.
