Mark your calendar's for December 20-21 to observe a total lunar eclipse. According to this NASA site NASA - Eclipses During 2010 those situated in Southern California and Northern Baja are especially well situated to observe it.

The eclipse will start around 10:30 p.m. and lasts until around 1:00 a.m.

I plan on heading out to AB to camp out and enjoy it if I am not called for jury duty, which I am scheduled for during that time.

I'll be out in ABSP for this next Monday and Tuesday.

The moon will be in the S SW portion of the sky when the eclipse occurs so I am looking for somewhere with elevation to view it from maybe Font's Point or Carrizo Mtn.

I will be out there for the day on Tuesday as well. Maybe we can meet up somewhere. What repeaters do you use? I'll try to monitor a few. I'll PM my # as well.

I am not sure when, but Corrizo Mtn closes sometime this month due to the bighorn sheep.

EDIT: It is closed Jan 1 to Jun 30.

It's gonna be a bit tough to watch this with this rain.

BOOO!!!!! I told my 10 y/o about it and he was disappointed cuz the weather is suckin! Well he was for about 30 seconds until he changed the game in is PS3!

I lucked out- I was in the Carson City area for work- it snowed and rained all day then cleared up in the late afternoon. Got up at midnight- went outside - and it was clear and about 10 degrees. Took a quick look- and then went back inside.

Now I am sitting in the Reno airport on standby hoping to get out on an earlier flight before it starts up all over again.

Even though the weather was not ideal for the eclipse I had a great time in ABSP exploring a few new trails and enjoying the solitude with no one in the park. The rain weas very minimal so it was a perfect cool day to get out and enjoy the desert. I ended up going to Font's Point, Clark Dry lake bed along the east side of Coyote Mtn., explored Coachwhip trail, and then through the Badlands to camp at Vista del Malpais.

The eclipse was viewable for brief periods as the clouds blew east and opened up sections of the sky. I saw one other vehicle out on the trails the entire two days which is the fewest I have ever seen out there. The sky made for some spectacular images.

Here are a few pics.

If you ever get bored waiting for a lunar event you can always do light paintings of your truck to pass the time. All you do is put your camera on a tripod, set the camera to "bulb" so that you can control the shutter manually, open the shutter, walk around the vehicle with a flashlight lighting the areas you want, and then close the shutter. The camera will not pick up the person walking around the truck since you are in motion and it is a long exposure.
