hobbes, I got my aux setup from a wrecker yard in AUS and had it shipped via slow boat here to SoCal. Things may be different now but at the time I got mine it was generally known that the Aussie's considered the oem aux tank much to small to take seriously for the bush. As a result, there were many that had been removed immediately upon purchase from the dealer and chucked in a yard. There were also many that pulled the whole petrol/diesel fuel system in favor of lpg. That was the circumstances for mine. It looked nearly new and included the tank, straps, hoses, xfer pump assembly, filler neck and dash switch. The only item I didn't get was the shorter filler tube that goes to the main tank. And of course it required George's ecu. But I was able to purchase it all for under $300 US and the slow boat shipping was around $65. The "only" issue was that it was not insured and had no tracking, etc. so if it didn't show up I was SOL. It took nearly 3 months before it showed up on my door but for some reason I never had to deal with importing, lading, etc.

At any rate, I suppose my point is that at one time this would have been a viable option but I think it is a lot harder and more expensive to do now. Good luck.

I just jumped in on this thread and had an idea.

How about looking into existing Toyota tanks that are used in other vehicles that might fit our need. Say a tank from a Camry, Corolla, Tercel, Cellica or other small car where a Junk yard find might have all the straps, senders, vents, pump and what ever to be modified into the space of the tire carrier. If you have a rear bumper with tire carrier there is quit a large chunk of real estate down there to work with.

Over a grand for an additional 12 gallons of fuel certainly isn't worth it. I'm visiting a couple countries in the middle east. I doubt they have salvage yards as we know them (with 80s sitting there), but I'll ask around anyhow. Desert tends to keep things nice.

Landtank probably has the best idea.

I would be willing to go in with some folks to import a few of the 44 Gallon Long rangers that slee used to sell! Pretty slick unit and go where the spare tires is. It uses a OEM sender and can work with the Non US subtank switch!

They are only sold in OZ and can be brought here but the shipping is pretty hefty! The shipping is the same whether you buy one or 10. So if 4 others are interested in doing this, it may be worth it! I want one for sure!

Any interest, please PM me!

The important question is the cost. Also do they come with dual filler necks?

Also I don't mind the hanging down. That's why I have the lift. ;)

I’m surprised that Ali hasn’t already chimed in (although I only just noticed this thread). He has a great set up for an aux tank that he designed and built himself utilizing another tank for his application. I’m sure if we asked him nicely he would share his vast knowledge with us.:D :D

Ali does a lot of long distance runs so I’m sure that it’s well tested.

Ali used an OEM OZ tank, neck and straps. He fabbed the transfer system.

Really? I saw it a few years ago and I could have sworn it look as if it came out of a domestic vehicle or at least not a Toyota, but I really didn’t look very hard. The reason why I might have thought that was because it didn’t seem to hang very low. But he still gets much props for thinking out of the box with the transfer system.:)

No, they will most likely NOT come with the filler necks! Possibly but i doubt it!

As for hanging down, i just recently helped another member install one of these and the tank hangs down LESS then the factory spare, believe it or not! That alone was very convincing for me to get one. They are tucked up higher then even the 34 gallon version!

If this statement is true...I'd be in...Not that I am saying your pants are on fire...I'd just like to see the pics and documentation.
I looked at my 80 today to see how a tank would fit. Exhaust runs by the spare. You'd need something build for that specific space or you'd loose a bit of real estate.
I will see if I can contact some of my AU cousins. One of them has got to wheel. They always shoot my guns when they are in town...
Do you know how much they would run with out shipping?

Did the JDM Market 80's ever have an AUX tank?

I haven't hit the trailes much, but when I did it was the spare that kept scraping. I thought it was the reciever hitch but the person behind me said he thought it was the spare. I threw the spare in the back and stopped scraping so often.
