Hello,

I have just pulled off the head and surrounding accessories from the block. I plan on cleaning up the bay. Since I have everything off now, is there a recommended service/replacement that I should do since everything is off? I would hate to put it all back together and have to replace something stupid that is impossible to get when I could have just done it from the get-go. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

power steering HP hose, transmission soft lines, clean out hard vacuum lines and test VSV's, wrap engine harness @ EGR, timing chain guides (all timing components really if not part of the plan already), heater hoses, heater valve, assess upper rear heater hard lines. Starter cables if you feel like it.

The rabbit hole is very deep. With 475K miles the timing chain guides are well overdue for replacement. The plastic on these goes the same way as everything else plastic on the truck. To replace them you need to pull the timing cover which will let you fit a new seal on the oil pump housing and also replace the front main oil seal. To pull the timing cover you need to drop the oil pans so on a positive note you will have leak free engine and piece of mind. Thankfully most of the parts you need are included in the engine overhaul kit that Mr. T provides.

Couple suggestions not mentioned above:
1. Replace all the vacuum lines as you should have easy access
2. Check your PHH, if it is original or is looking bad replace it.
3. Fuel filter since it is removed anyway.
4. Been said but check and heat wrap the harness around the EGR area.

timing cover o-rings for sure

Every water/heater/radiator hose, new OEM hose clamps, every vacuum line, rebuild the engine harness with all new connectors and rewrap/repair any cracked wires, add heat protective wrap/sleeve close to the EGR pipe (or remove EGR system if no inspections in your area), clean inside intake manifolds, clean valve cover including internal oil baffle box, new valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals, new spark plug wires, distributor cap/ rotor.

If you pull the engine, reseal timing chain cover and replace the internal O-rings, new timing chain slippers (and maybe the chain and sprockets), reseal the upper and lower oil pans, rebuild the head (machine shop) clean Throttle Body off the vehicle (all internal ports, be careful with the dashpot rubber, no harsh solvents). Pull oil cooler to clean, reseal. and 27 other little jobs.

Many people who've done this with the engine in the vehicle have said they wished they had pulled the engine out to perform all the necessary work.

Excellent suggestions in all the posts above.
When I did mine. I pulled the whole banana. Not that difficult. Then, every task is SO easy. For example: the upper oil pan; with the block on a stand turned upside down - so easy to get clean and aligned for the pan to fit without messing up the FIPG.
Confidence in each element of work is priceless. Especially when you're out in the middle of nowhere alone (aka, LandCruiser territory).
My 2 pennies if you can find 'em

Like I said, slippery slope!🕺

Could be about a $1000 ride on that slippery slope.

I refreshed all hoses, seals (without a full tear down), harness connectors, thermostat, belts, sensors, oem hose clips, etc

Gasket kit plus all the bibs'n'bobs add up

Everything is doable in the vehicle.
If you have an engine crane and stand and a garage to work in, it's a lot of work, but not hard to pull the engine.
I've done both, not sure which way I'd jump to do similar in the future.

Damn that's impressive! Thought mine did well at 370k before the bearing in #5 went

I would check all the little vacuum valves underneath the upper plenum... They are a bitch to pull out and fix if the smog goes south. Of course, I'm in California and have some PTSD about it
