That being said, I think "catastophic damage" and "loss of steering" is quite unlikely. Those birf parts were rolling everywhere they pleased and never locked up my steering.

I would chalk that one up to luck, and I certainly wouldn't bet on it happening again. Locking up the steering knuckle is extremely common with a broken birfield. I have seen it happen many times. Why would anyone ever take the chance?
