Cruiser Killer. That's sad. Those things sitting there prob. have half the rust as the ones here in New England.

I think the HG blew. I was driving back from Fort Smith, AR and luckily got within two miles of home when I noticed the temp rising. I pulled over and popped the hood and had coolant steaming on the engine. After it cooled down a bit I took a look see and noticed burnt gunk and steam under the front of the exhaust manifold and cylinder one as well as coolant scattered around. Temp never got over 3/4 so that is good. Filled with water and limped home with the temp needle slightly over half. Lifted hood and steam was confirmed in same spot. I'll get some photos when it cools down some more. My oil analysis showed no coolant in oil last week so it much of been a nice blow out.

Interesting spot can you actually see the spot or just area. a lot of areas there going to the water jacket. the oil cooler and thermostat housing. although i think Boots4 had a failure in the head gasket right there but i don't think he had flow just slow loss of coolant and couldn't tell where until he pulled the head.

That sucks man. Hopefully you'll be able to get it back on the road in time for Big Bend.
That's the first thing I thought about. Need to do my research now to see if I can get it done myself or have a shop do it. Either way I'm going. I can alway take my CRD.

All the steam was coming from there and I saw some bubbles coming from the exhaust gasket in that area. The oil filter had a coolant puddle on top of it. Tomorrow I am going to clean the area and start it up see if I can see it. My heater was going in and out as well when I was limping home.
I am thinking I did have a leak there that I didn't know. When I rad leaked and was replaced I assumes that was the only leak. Had to add about 1/4 gallon of coolant during the trip. Was hoping it was just air in the system from when the rad was replaced. Guess not.
I guess it's a good time to upgrade valve springs and governor spring now.

I may have lucked out. I added water this morning and started it up. No misfires, started right up with it being in the 30s this morning. Noticed coolant leaking right away from the same area. This time I noticed that the water neck/ accessory bracket was not tight. You can barely see it in the photo. Now just need to figure out how to tighten it down.

That's great news. You'll notice many things loosen up because of the vibration from the Cummins. I hope it's an easy fix.
It is good news indeed. Except there doesn't seem to be a good way for it to sit flush from what I can see. I don't know if there was an O ring/ gasket that failed. It seems the accessory bracket held it in place. Hopefully the bracket didn't warp. Only bolt I can find only holds the water neck's position from turning. I guess I need to try and get in touch with dieseladapters but that doesn't seem to be easy reading others treads.

Maybe it never got tightened down and/or loc tighted properly in the first place. Seems entirely plausible.

Found the issue. Hairline crack in thermostat housing/water inlet. Now need to figure out how to get a replacement. You can see the one inch crack in the housing.

Ordered some goodies today.
4K governor springs
AFC spring kit
HD valve springs w/ billet retainers
Fuel plate #10
Valve spring compressor
Feeler gauge
I will be doing the install myself. I've watched enough youtube videos that I feel confident I can do the job.

I love your thought process. It's about like mine.

I just saved a bunch of money not having to fix this. Time for some new parts... I put a 3800 gov spring in mine and like it a lot. I don't run it up there but a have fuel all the way through the lower end.

I need springs also. Who'd you go with?

You ordered all those goodies.....but what about that broken part?

I went with Hamilton springs and retainers. I don't plan to run it at high but just in case I got them.

Called and left message and emailed. I don't expect any response since a lot of business are closed through New Years. Hopefully it's a quick once I get a hold of him.
