Oh man... I guess I haven't updated this thread!
The 5.29's actually were a bit of a story. I didn't know what the hell I was doing for the install, so I figured I'd surround myself with a bunch of folks who do. Well, that went according to plan - what didn't go according to plan was the amount of time it was going to take!
Tore down the 3rds, pulled the axels (and discovered a trashed - completely trashed - passenger bearing due to water intrusion and a lack of grease that was my fault), and drained the t-case. My friend Luis wisely recommends we don't pull the t-case until after we've got a little further into the day.
Well, long story short around 8pm (after starting at 7), the rear 3rd is back together. But the front isn't patterning out right.
So I call it and we put the truck back into enough parts that allows us to roll it back into the driveway for a bit.
I didn't get a chance until the following weekend to get back up to it, and armed with new information Luis and I knock out the front 3rd. Everything went pretty well (the solid spacers took a good few hours to get right)... but finally preload was right and everything looked good.
I put the 3rd back in the truck and start working on putting the axel back together. A short while later Luis comes over ...
"I think you really f^*ked up".
Uh oh...
He hands me the frickin' lock sleeve! I forgot to put it back in!!!!
Ugh. Back out comes the 3rd, and I take a look at the locker, wondering if I can get the sleeve back in there if I get the fork out of the way. Nope.
So the entire frickin' carrier comes BACK apart. Put the sleeve back in, put the carrier back together, set the backlash... we were torquing the bearing caps in the jig we were using - it required one of us to hold onto the 3rd while the other used the wrench. He thought I was done. I was going for one more pull...
Thud. 3rd falls on the ground, in the dirt.
%$(*)%$&)#$!!!!!!!
After a bit of disbelief, we look over the damage. Dirt is freaking EVERYWHERE. There's no escaping it - it has to come apart. AGAIN.
After a lot of cleaning, we finally get the whole thing set back up again. Finally get it back in the truck, and work on getting the axels back in the truck. Around midnight I finally leave.
Next Sunday I head back up, and put the driveshafts back in. Fill it up with gear oil (god I hate that stuff), and finally get to drive. Unlock the front. CLICK! Unlock the center. CLICK! Unlock the rear. Nothing.
Uh oh.... one of the guys working on the rear 3rd took apart the elocker to clean it and such. He knew what he was doing, but he wasn't 100% sure if it was engaged or disengaged when he took it apart. So he told me I had a 50/50 shot he'd got it right. I'm of course thinking the worst... spend a few minutes under the truck, take the locker apart as much as I can without destroying it, look at some drawings.... then I take a deep breath and think about it a little more.
Go get the jack. Jack up the rear. CLICK! Ahhhh yes.
So off I go on the maiden voyage... a bit on the far side of the recommendation for the initial run (20ish miles), but I figure I'll stop and check temps on the way (brought my handy IR temp reader). The only problem was the front-left was now kicking in the ABS at around 7-10MPH... I knew others have had this issue, I figure it's a dirty ABS sensor.
Took the slow-ish drive home... no odd sounds.
It's been about 150 miles now, and I haven't really gotten on the gas much, but it sure does have a lot of get-up-and-go with my 33's on there. (SOON TO BE 37's!!) It jumps off the line for sure.
The t-case work has to wait for another weekend, as does the Slee 4" lift... but it WILL be done before GSMTR
I need to do a good brake flush on it as well.... pedal is getting mushy, but I have new lines and all anyway. Fluid is probably due as well...
