I just got my ham license, so I went and got a radio for my truck. It's a Kenwood TM-V71A, which is a dual band setup. Nice radio - I'm still learning all about it, but in the short time I've had it I really like it.

Anyway, the 'where am I going to put this thing' has been bugging me. Last night I set out to figure out the answer, and it became clear to me once I started taking the glove box out to route the antenna wires and head unit remote wire - rip out the old factory amp, and put it there!

Since the head detaches and can be located just about anywhere, that was the first thing to mount. I like the idea of up high, so I put it right by the sunroof controls using some 3M VHB tape.

I ran the wire inside the black gasket that goes around the windshield, then down the A-pillar and up inside the dashboard.

The factory amp is behind the crappy dash speaker on the passenger side. You can see I've already removed the speaker and I'm ready to pull the amp. All it takes is a few connectors to get pulled and two screws, then it's out.

Here was the 'test fit' before I went crazy trying to make it fit:

It was like it was made for it! The Kenwood has a speaker built into the top, and it would alight just about perfetly to work in this situation as well. However, I have a remote speaker anyway that I'll be using... but I might put a switch on the external speaker just in case I don't want to use it for whatever reason. There isn't a whole lot of room in there if you want to change connections once this is all done.

So I took the mounting bracket and drilled out some 1/8 holes so the factory screws that hold the speaker in place could be re-used. Drilled thru the plastic and into the bracket, and whadda know, it's in there!

The other issue is the mic line. It actually uses an RJ-45, but it wasn't long enough to go all the way around to where the radio is mounted. I had a ton of CAT-5 stuff laying around, so that wasn't a problem. I just made a straight-thru cable with a keystone jack on one end, and routed it from around the e-brake handle back thru the dash, and over to the radio.

Perfect!

A picture of it finally set in there:

Works like a charm, completely out of the way.. I love it. By the way, I routed the antenna cable thru the evaporator discharge hole in the firewall up to its mount on the hood. Except for the roof, this is probably the best place you can mount an antenna on one of these trucks.

I have the Kenwood 281 mounted below my CD head unit. I chose it because it's 65w and has a front mounted speaker. Can you spot my 2m antenna?

Nice install.

I see something on your roof there.

I've been looking at antennas, trying to find one that's trail friendly (when you have a lot of trees that like to hug your truck) and yet still has good rx/tx. What did you pick?

This is a nice installation. I'm currently looking at the same radio to replace my TM-271A. I was planning on using the "knee" speakers as the external speakers for the unit.
Did you run into any issues with the power and ground wires?

I have a 40-amp 10ga wire run from the battery that I use for a few non-switched accessories - a dual cig lighter port, the alarm and now the Kenwood. The ground is run back to a nice clean ground on the frame. No problems whatsoever (although there is alternator noise in the line that I'm going to clear up later - but it doesn't come over the Kenwood).

Damn. That's nice...

OK, I'm gonna sell the Yeasu I just bought...

:hhmm:

What made decide to go with the TM-V71a? I've got the TM-D710G. The display is a little bigger but its got everything you need for APRS. I put the main unit under the driver's seat. I have to turn it all the way up sometimes but its manageable. Also put my antenna on the front bumper. Probably isn't the best location but I don't ever had to worry about hitting it on trees.
I'm thinking about running another NMO mount on the roof and just switch antenna cables if I ever needed more range, but right now its working great.

Price and availability. I'm lucky enough to have an AES store near me, so I can look at all the radios and compare them in person. Big deciding factor when I looked at the way the faceplate remote kit worked, and how the cables were (the faceplate uses RG-11 on one side and RG-45 on the other, so I would be able to make my own cable if I needed longer than they supplied). Same with the mic cables.

Also, I don't know about the D710G, but the V71A is a real dual band. You can do any combination of VHF/UHF you want on each A/B side, with separate volume and squelch controls.

An external speaker is your friend, too ;)

And I've flooded my truck - a few inches deep in the cab one time. So I didn't want to mount anything under the seats or whatnot... I'd rather not have to worry about it if something goes wrong on the trail.

Nice install. I have the same radio mounted with the double swivel mount above the mirror. Reached out 42 miles the other day and hit a repeater by the lake. I like the idea of having it up higher in the cab as mine is under the seat and I wonder what might happen to the radio under there if jammed up in water.

The D710G is a dual band also. Side A and B can be set to either UHF or VHF. Both can be on the same or different. It is a little harder to find a place to mount the faceplate. So having a smaller faceplate helps.

:wrench:Great spot! I also like my Kenwood 2 m TM281A but it fits in the dash like a single din radio. I kinda like the flexibility of the unit youre running for where you can locate it.

I used the knee speakers for my external speakers serving both the dual band and CB radios (dpdt switch between them). Clip off the capacitors to provide full range if you want to do this, but be prepared to be underwhelmed by their performance. I can barely hear mine at full volume while driving.

A purpose built external speaker would probably be a better choice, it's what I intend to.

Yes, I have one of the MFJ speakers. I think I paid all of $12 for it, and I have it (right now) sitting under where the handbrake is. Its perfect (can get way too loud). And the way I have it now, it's got a little extra cable that I might even be able to move it so I could hear it outside the truck if I wanted to (but really I see my handheld doing that job for me, not a speaker).

I have the same unit. Been a great radio. Would like to upgrade the head hit for ARPS some day but for now does all I need it to. Plus the green display kind of matches the OEM interior back lighting. I went under the driver's seat with the main radio box.

You just about matched my setup with under the seat. How did you end up securing the main box under the seat? I got a big strip of Velcro and stuck it to the carpet

Sheet metal screws through the floor. Then sealed the exterior with undercoating.
