Hey Jason, The Panhards have been lengthened, so the axles are centered at a slightly higher height than stock springs. The axles will of course shift to the left or right depending on height, but overall it is pretty minor and has not been an issue yet.

The airbags are a little bit finicky but they have worked so far, I still need to get better tubing fittings that dont leak (replace quick connects with barbed), I have used them to tilt/level the vehicle when going through some off camber ruts that make you think the vehicle was going to go over a while ago. They might not be for everyone, but they make the ride soft with the extra weight in the front.

The thing on the roof is a solar panel to keep the batteries topped up, it was put on by the PO, although I would like to install a top mount IC one day and put a subaru scoop there instead.

Reminds me I should get a couple more pics on this thread, once I can find the batteries for my camera....

Cool van! Is this the cummins converted one that was for sale in Saskatchewan? a while back?

D

Ya this is the one from saskatchewan.

I had a 92 fj80 before this one, I swapped in a 350 TBI, and a 2.5" lift, then it got written off, So i picked the white 80 for a few bucks more than the insurance settlement.

PO did the bags and cummins with the yota auto. Also had the front bumper and 8274.

Since ive had it, ive had the head ported polished and rebuilt, replaced the bags a couple times (before realizing not having bumpstops was wearing holes in the bags), new rubber, the manual trans w/splitcase. Pyro & boost, rear storage shelves behind third row. Removed the roof rack and got a RTT for it, custom center console and shift console, and started a rear bumper (mig gave up the ghost), and recently replaced the AVM hubs with 60 series AISINS. Also did a "Denny T" fuel pin upgrade, it makes some smoke now with the skinny pedal!

In the future I would like to beef up the axles a bit and get lockers, finish the rear bumper, and then spend a bit more time exploring with it, instead of wrenching on it. Still needs a fuel pump rebuild and power steering/vacuum pump rebuild as well.

Cody,

Love the truck, I would love to put a 4BT cummins/5 speed in mine, question, is the tire in the first picture of the post "Mud King" I had a set of 35's on mine and they accutally did pretty good and wore well.

Just curious cause I only paid $135/tire but couldn't find another set, I think they have been discontinued.

I had to go back and have a look, I think they arent my tires. In the midst of projects we took a 60 series a friend bought and parted/gutted/dismembered it. The tire from the pic is one of his tires off the old BJ60, and is part of a set of 5 tires living up in the mezzanine of my garage at the moment waiting for a new home on the cheap ($35 each w/rim about 30% rubber left) good for trail spares.

The truck they were on had been wheeled hard and was on its side at least once, but the PO had some good times with it. I have heard the vehicle worked well in the muck with the mud kings and an aussie locker in the rear.

If your in calgary and looking for a trail spare, drop me a line (although I might be a little out of the way), I need to get Ian's stuff sold/out of my garage at some point. Otherwise ill keep stealing parts, like his AISIN hubs.

Rear bumper endcaps

Could you post up some pics of your rear bumper end caps? Would love to get a closer look.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I missed your post, I will post some pics before the weekend.

I just remembered to take some pictures for you.

I used my uncles welder out of town and only had time to spray paint it. Im planning on sand blasting it and getting it powder coated this summer.

Rear bumper endcaps

Hey, thanks a lot. I didn't want to bug you but I really wanted to see more. I want to build a rear tire carrier but can't decide what route to take. I really like your endcaps but don't know if I'm talented enough to build my own. I've got access to a welder but have never welded before. I would obviously do a bunch of practice welds and hope that I can get it down before starting on the project.

I can only assume you fabbed these up off the cuff and there are no plans or measurements laying around to reproduce these. If, however I'm wrong would you mind posting some of the dimensions? I don't want to bother you or be a hassle I just really like your design better than anything else I've seen out there.

Regardless thanks again for the pics.

Just read your whole thread and just wanted to say good job. Had a question though. With the granny 1st in the tranny do you feel the need for more gearing on the trail or is it plenty with the cummins? Been gathering parts to do something halfway between yours and Dusty's. Thanks and sweet cruiser!

Sorry, late respeonse here!

I definately dont feel I need more low gearing. The trans feels low geared with 37's and stock gears in the diffs.

I dont really use 4low on the trail, more to do with the torque involved with stock axles though.

The dodge trucks came with +/-32" tires and 3.55 gears. With the stock 4.11's and 37's the truck is revving a bit high for 110km/hr/65mph.

Granny low and with the engine idleing is good enough for the kind of driving I do, though if your into the rocks a fair bit you may want differennt gears in your diffs or split case.

Nice!

Just read your thread, I love it.

Been planning on building a 6BT FJ80 for a while now hopefully going down to Texas to pick up my 80 in November just in time for a winter project!

Update:

The drivetrain is still working well, I had some issues at the river shiver run:
RiverShiver 2012 Photo Gallery
the problem I had was related to the clutch pedal bucket cracking and flexing the firewall so I didnt have full pedal travel, but got it fixed.

Put some bling on the front and built a new front bumper, got the sliders on, and bought some chains for it, who doesnt like pictures? :hhmm:

great thread

Just found your thread. This is just what I needed to see! The wife says the red mistress in the barn is starting to get on her nerves!

I am working on the same engine/trans setup in a 60 and was tinkering with the clutch setup this week. Have or did you have any trouble with the pedal travel using the 60 pedals? It seems I may have to shorten the shaft on the dodge master plunger to get it to mate to the yota pedal. I used a 1.5" washer and drilled two holes to mount it to the firewall.

Also, are you running the stock 5.9 fan w/clutch or electrics?

I just realized I missed a bunch of responses a while back, so a bit of a late reply on my end sorry.

What did you do for the headlights? Just Ebay lights?

Ebay projectors, they work really well compared to stock.

I was going to make two sets, but didnt get around to finishing the other one. Ill have to see if they are still around my garage somewhere, maybe PM me if your still interested, I got a lot on my plate lately but Ill try and have a look.

No probs with the pedal setup, but I did redrill the hole for the rod to the master.

I did build my own bucket for the pedal instead of cutting metal out of the 60 but it should work stock I think.

Well, my 80 failed about 800 km from home and I had it towed back. I thought it was the transmission which I had someone rebuilt about a year and a half ago but it was actually the clutch.

Also had a leak from the trans which I traced to the back of the advanced adapter.

some pics

Turns out the bearing for the AA output shaft split into two pieces. I cant see why, it still held the bearings and race in place. I almost didnt notice it but the bearing seal had fallen out and I pulled the bearing to inspect it. Almost put it back in the truck.
