Hi all,

The clutch in my 90 4x4 PU went bad on me tonight. The pedal has alot of play and basically gave up the ghost. I did check the clutch cylinder where the fluid is checked and filled a while back and topped it off. I guess at 120k, it gives up the ghost.

I filled it with fluid and will not engage when the truck is running when the clutch is depressed firmly. When the truck is off, it shifts into all of the gears.

I am wondering what it will cost me to replace the clutch with labor and the clutch slave cylinder?

Any help will greatly appreciated.

Mark

with labor its about 1 k 2 if your getting riped off. but without labor i.e. if you do it yourself its about 70$ for parts (as long as the flywheele is ok if not add an extra 100$) good luck man.

$70 for a clutch? Maybe if you buy it at Walmart, for a Honda Civic.

An OEM clutch for a V6 will run about $200 for the usual parts (pressure plate, disc, T/O bearing, pilot bearing). The 22RE is less, by about $50. Do NOT buy a cheap clutch (AutoZone, etc), it will not last, I learned this the hard way.

MAKE SURE YOU ALSO REPLACE THE REAR MAIN SEAL. Don't let a shop tell you "well it's not leaking, so I don't think you should bother". Tell them to replace it anyway.

Get the flywheel resurfaced. Should be $15-30 depending on the machine shop you use.

And you should also do the fuel filter while the tranny is down. It's MUCH easier to reach, especially in the 22RE.

Clutch replacements are a huge markup for most shops. It sounds like a huge job, but an experienced person can do one in about 4-5 hours, if they have the right setup. My record is 3.5 hours, but that was working with my son, and we had a spare flywheel all surfaced and ready to swap in.

It doesn't sound like you'll be doing the work yourself, or I would give you a step-by-step with all the tricks I've learned.

BTW, do you still want this stereo from my turbo parts truck? It's all boxed up and ready to ship. But I have other people that now want it. Let me know.

Ya I was quoting autosuck prices Ive changed out enough 22re clutches that my friends and I can do it in a couple hours now so a crappy cheapo autozone clutch with a lifetime warenty isnt a horrible thing for me, but looking at it retrospectivly I agree youll probobly wanna get one from the dealership and itll run you a buck and a half.

and ya its easy to get the flywheel resurfaced for cheap its just getting it done while waiting to put the truck back together is a b*$&h but its a good way to go

ken is right about the rear main seal, it shouldnt add much to the cost anyways.

and shucks I didnt even think of that filter... probobly a good idea i guess i take stuff like that for granite cuz I can stuff myself under the front wheel well and take that thing out any time I want :D

so basicly... what ken said x 2

before you dive into a headache of $$$$

grab a flash lite, look at the bracket the clutch and brake pedal attach to.

the upper left corner of the bracket may be broken.

actuate the clutch pedal by hand, while looking for a crack in the metal.

Hey fellas,

Thanks for the tip, we towed the the truck to a mechanic that is trust worthy. I have a 22RE engine. I had my dad sit in the truck and depress the clutch, and he thinks, that a retainer spring broke on me, because there is no tension on the clutch.

I am hoping its something that simple.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi all,

I got the good news, they replaced the Master Cylinder and Clutch Slave Cylinder, and a few other parts. The good news is that they will replace the hoses and radiator for 65.00. Yippie.

$65.00 dollars labor right?? Well I hope at least!!!

My Toy Tech quoted me 10 Hrs. labor and around 7 to 8 hundred for parts, which include all the Hydraulics for brakes and clutch, and rear main, clutch, PP & TOB and machine flywheel. But i get 25% discount on parts and can probably talk them outta 10% on Labor . The best thing about this is i do not get dirty!! and it all should run around 1600.00 total All Toy OEM Parts which have 236K on them and would have more but i like to ride clutch and toasted TOB!!:o

7-8 hundred for parts sounds like you're getting screwed.... Even if you're getting new master cylinders on the clutch and brake..... Have you seen a breakdown on that stuff?

I agree. In fact, I think you're about a grand high on the total. I just replaced my master, slave and clutch and used an LC Engineering Pro clutch and I didn't come close to that with parts and labor.

The pricing is dependant on the vehicle and engine, but even a V6 4Runner should only run about $325-350 for a complete OEM clutch. Ya, your parts prices are out of line, he's not doing you any favors.

10 man-hours of labor is about right, although it can be done for a lot less if you have a lot of experience.

yep i will get a breakdown before i get any work done and yes he will be replacing all the parts in the Clutch and brake Hydraulic systems to include fluid in both! Seemed high but that was a spur of the moment ballpark stab when he gave me the info and like i said i get 25% discount on parts ! i will get service writer to give me a detailed quote on paper soon! should be cheaper than 7 ot 8 hundred after discount!
