Looks like my clockspring is going out. I have the scraping noise and typical recoil noise. Horn and cruise control still works. I am a proponent of using genuine parts but spending $300 on a plastic clockspring is tough to swallow. I was wondering if anyone has used the aftermarket clocksprings. I have seen them as cheap as $15 all the way up to $150. Still much cheaper than going OEM. I have also seen a few used ones on ebay but I doubt their condition and longevity due to the age of our vehicles and mileage. What are your thoughts?

agree w malleus. use oem as this is a potential life saving investment. i had mine done a couple of years ago by dealer. i held my breath while paying😓
Yes, I have thought about this being a safety concern. I am also concerned about the airbag going off unexpectedly if that is even possible due to a cheap clockspring.

Most dealers are charging from $308 to $370, some as high as $500. Amayama is $164 + shipping. Partsouq is around $182 + shipping. I think even with tariffs I still come out ahead. Need to find out if its better to have it shipped from UAE or Japan.

Once clock spring is replaced will air bag light need to be reset with scanner or will it go off automatically?

Pretty sure it goes off on its own. You'll have the battery unhooked while you replace (!!!), so that should "soft clear" any codes.

^^^ Yes, I will definitely disconnect the battery before replacement. I saw a video on YouTube on how to replace a clockspring on an LX470, seems pretty straightforward.

I did this a month ago, I didn’t need a scanner to clear any codes. While you’re in there, take a look at the steering angle sensor ring. I was getting a scraping noise when turning the steering wheel that I thought was coming from the clock spring, but it was actually the angle sensor ring. I greased it up and so far it’s been good.

Thanks for the suggestion. I remember reading about greasing the angle sensor ring in another thread. What grease did you use?

I just used what I had handy on my garage shelf, it was red lithium grease. I’m no grease expert so I’m not sure if that was a good choice or not. But it’s been working so far.

Please elaborate or provide link. I'm getting a scraping noise from steering shaft area lately... Did not grease when I replaced my clockspring a long time back.

Which clock spring did you use? OEM or aftermarket?

I'm planning on using white silicon grease. I'm sure that's what the factory used.

Steering wheel angle sensor, its where the lights and wiper stalks connect. It is below the clockspring. Lightly grease around the steering shaft and under the washer that sits above the steering wheel angle sensor.

There is a thread somewhere on this forum that discusses this and shows pictures.

Just chiming in to say prepare yourself with a steering wheel puller or your own DIY device.

I tore into my steering wheel to change my clock spring only to find out I couldn't pull the wheel off with my hands/arms. Thankfully I was at work (ADGU) and could fab up a puller with [M8?] bolts real quick. I yanked on the thing for 15 minutes and couldn't get it to budge. The tool got it loose in an instant.

Right tool for the job makes all the difference!

I have removed 2 other wheels previously - one was this exact wheel when I got it recovered by Dallas Steering Wheel. I can't remember ever needing a puller, but perhaps I just blocked that out.
