The other day I was talking to someone about doing stuff on cars and around the house. They were saying I was lucky because I knew how to do my own work. I told them I didn't always know how, I just tried and learned. The more stuff you try the more you learn, the easier it is to learn the next thing.

I have to agree. I still don't know much compared to others, but my father was great at doing most things himself but he never could work on cars. When I got into 4 wheel drives, I bought a good FSM and started reading and then in 2000 discovered the internet which helped out more than a book would. I can do most things now, still need help online, but doing it with my own two hands is much more gratifiying. ALL my friends and wife's friends call me to help with thier house, cars, what ever. Most guys don't know which end of a hammer to use, let alone rebuild an axle.

Only complaint I have is with new cars. There is only so much a garage mechanic can do before it has to be taken over by the dealer with all the computer and technical brains cars have now.

Oh and Rusy, I know it isn't a condom, but it is all I can see when I see your avitar!

Once you know the mechanics of how something works it makes it pretty easy to work on, well for me. This usually involves tearing something apart and playing with it till I figure it out and understand what the purpose of each part is. Once you know that you know where the parts should go and why. :meh:

Dont get me wrong!!!!
I would NOT be ANYWHERE in this hobby if it wasnt for Ih8mud and other SELECT sites like this one and its members. However, there is some "intestinal fortitude" that HAS TO BE THERE to begin with. IMO...its having the BALLS to fail, start over and get it right.
It also helps to have a DD that you can hop in and get to and from and be able to leave the "project" in the garage. Its a whole different story when it ABSOLUTELY HAS TO RUN to get you to work on Monday.
That is the rub, at least in my case. I can have all the confidence in the world to screw up when I know that I have alternate means to EAT! The fun goes away to a large degree when you HAVE to do it.
I was reminded of this a couple mos. ago when I had to do a HG repair on my daughters 4 runner, and it needed to be done ASAP!
However the skills I have developed from this hobby transferred over to something practical. Plus...having the confidence to be able to do it and KNOW that I COULD was invaluable. It saved us THOUSANDS for a 3K dollar rig.

I am DYING to get wheeling again!!!
I got some pics from the last Rubicon that I wheeled with my old rig, a couple years back (09)...actually, it was the VERY RUN when I decided that the wagon was NOT quite the rig I needed for what I like doing...Anyway, it just got me so psyched to get back behind the wheel again.
I just CAN NOT wait to get done. Made a list of all that needs to be done...really isnt THAT bad. Most are day projects :lol:

I mean really!!!!
Look at the SMILE ON MY FACE!!!!!!

Yep, it shure looks like youre missing it.:hillbilly:
How do you replace that feeling now?
I get why your :princess: is so supportive of this, must be **** for her now.;):p:lol:

Michael...
I keep building so that one day (hopefully sooner rather than MUCH LATER) I can do what it is that I LOVE doing. I do love the build process, but...this has been a LOOOONG hiatus from the trails. I got to go as a passenger last year with RustyTLC. Which is GREAT, but not the same.
LOL...My wife is looking forward to me being "done" so I can start on house projects.:deadhorse:

Whats wrong with a wagon?? I wheel wagons and love em!

I was just playing around but it drove out of this.
in the last 2 shots the tire is about 4 foot off of the ground and thats with 40's :meh:

NIIIIIZE!:grinpimp:
Nothing really WRONG with the wagon. It just wasnt the "right" rig for me. It did EVERYTHING that I asked it to do, but... We were on the trail just before Buck Island sitting in "traffic" and I was contemplating my dual case set up and vortec install that I had PLANNED for the 62. I came to the realization at that point that it just would NEVER be the rig that I NEEDED it to be. For me, they are just tooo damn big and too damn heavy.
My first instinct was to chop the 62 apart and do an extended cab flat bed...THAT was where the wife PUT HER FOOT DOWN!!!!
"No EFFING WAY are we gonna have some WHITE TRASH MONSTROSITY in front of THIS house!". That would have solved EVERY PROBLEM that I had at that point, but...I showed her pics of the idea and she OBVIOUSLY hated it.
Georg (orangeFJ45) actually spurred the FJ40 build Idea. Only that involved me parting out the 62. She DID NOT deserve a fate like that, so I sold her to a good home.
I was looking at mini trucks and 4 runners and pre built rigs including 40's. The key was something the vortec would go into. The FJ40 was a PERFECT solution and I got it CHEAP!!! That BTW is a VERY RELATIVE term in this hobby.

BTW...I dont see ANY ROCKS in those photos!?!?!?!:flipoff2:

Yea the waggys are heavy for sure, but a bob out back would lighten the load alot, but I still see what you are saying. You still got a cruiser so its all good just wanted to let you know a waggy could still wheel hard. :grinpimp:

BTW...I dont see ANY ROCKS in those photos!?!?!?!:flipoff2:

yea not much here locally, to get any rock action I gotta drive a couple of hours, no big deal but this time of year $ is extra extra tight, and I have been having back issues Im having to shell out cash for so a trip wasnt in the cards.

Im goin to the Lone Star Cruiser Roundup in march at the new K2 Katemcy Rocks so Ill be able to fill me rock needs.

No rocks in Holland to and with petrol prices at $7,65:frown: a gallon rockclimbing is a real luxury:rolleyes:

FaaAAAWWWWWK!!!!
I can see that would be the case with prices that high!
And were Bitchin about fuel being above 3 bucks again .... You need to move. That's all there is to it! :)

Diesel is 3.05 is many places... my poor pocket book, but my truggy runs on pane so that is at least economical to a degree even more so now that I got it tuned in a lot better. It was nice being able to start it with it on its side like that too and it not know the difference.

That is the big difference in my mind. I'd love to have my truck run well at extreme angles like that.

Don't think my :princess: wants to move because I want to wheel.:grinpimp:

about $ 6,25 here for diesel. Think I paid about 6,40 today.

These prices are similar throughout Europe there is some difference but on the whole....
Some things are better some worse every place has its own strong points.
