The cracks had occurred off of where the hole was drilled through the x member. Life and death....probably not. Seems more like a progressive fatigue around that weakness in the steel in conjunction with the flex of the frame at those end points on the x member...
Keep in mind that Im not trying to sway you one way of the other.

I can imagine some cracks there over time.

I'm here for your (and others) input since your project has similarities to my rusty old tractor. :) I appreciate any opinions advice you've got to offer.

I hear ya. All you can do is take in all of the MANY opinions that get thrown out there and do what is best for you and YOUR rig.
I would think though that a 3/16 in scab plate over the front of that hole on the x member welded on would help immensely with the stress/ fatigue phenomenon. Pretty easy to fab up, and not too much to weld on either. I didnt realize that you were paying to have the welding done. That does get expensive QUICK in considering the rates that ive heard.

The only cross member failure I have heard of occurred when some asshat use a blue wrench to cut a square hole. If' your using a hole saw and get a hole with a nice round shape, no corners to propagate cracks, you should be okay.

With a decent bumper in place the cross member is pretty much window dressing anyway. At the worst if it fails it won't be a life or death thing.

Taking a little break from the cruiser build...
Prep for SnT this weekend, and Death Valley next weekend.
Then, we did THIS for yesterday for Halloween.

Lots of work, but also a TON of fun. the whole family gets involved and the neighborhood folks seem to enjoy it too.

You really went out there, I bet you had as much fun building it as showing it in the evening.:D

Great stuff:bounce::bounce2: definitely hardcore.

Not SOOOO much. Since this was a new set up in that we moved the structure OUT into the yard a bit, trying to do it cheap, easy and sturdy took a bit of time figuring. Got a good idea from Rusty TLC, and my wife came up with the idea of drilling a hole PART WAY through the top plate (2x2 plank) as a cap of sorts for the posts. positioned everything and I shored it up to the pillars in the front of the house. We worked up to the bell. I built it by myself, so I had to get creative with hanging some of the posts and why it took so long.

This is TECH....right!?:D

No costume pictures?

You guys looked pretty good last year.

I was Michal Meyers from the Holloween movies, and Julez had a gene simmons mask and everyone else in the fam. had face paint. We didnt get around to PEOPLE pics though which kinda sucks.
Funny the fear that Michael Meyers costume illicits. Kids and adults BOTH creep out with that one. I think I would too.:o

It couldn't have anything to do with the size of the guy behind the mask, could it????:flipoff2:

Decorations look great.

Had a rather productive weekend while waiting for my pitman arm to arrive...
Got my tilt column keyed. Called around on this and got quotes from 60 to 90 bucks and then called a little mom and pop shop across town...they only charged 20 bucks and they did it in an hour. Very happy about that.
Got my Ford towers and a spare shock from one of the guyz in the club to get my front shock mounts on.
But the big thing that I did was get my rear swing out built. Still gotta get my latch, license plate on and high lift mounted and little odds and ends, but for the most part its done.

Here's some pics.
