Can you not shift the tire over further the opposite direction of here it swings setting it off to one side so it will swing all the way open?

Nope... Had the Jerry cans off that side. I'm just gonna flop the two around. Possibly center the tire with one can on each side.

After hours of trying to fit both the jerry cans and the spare on the swing out, I discovered that it just was not gonna work the way originally planned. When I moved the tire over to the opposite side, I had interference with the latch. I COULD have made it work if I were gonna stick with 35's, but anything over that, Id be screwed when I up sized the tire.
Sooooo. The tire got centered on the swing out and im gonna run the cans on the fender well at the back secured in the cage. I may also build some can carriers off the tire structure, on each side of the tire, that will elevate them out of the way of the spindle, latch and tub, but that is gonna have to wait till I get new tires. So in the rig is where theyre gonna have to go for the time being.
I had to make a new way to mount the license plate as well. Used the FREE lug holes in the wheel for that.I like it!
The cage is pretty much ALL welded and bolted in except, a few partial welds that need to be finished when I pull the cage out.
Also re enforced the steering column to dash bracket, so that'd done and I already pulled it out of the rig and its off to the side.
All that's left before I pull the tub is mounting the trans cooler and the coolant over flow, a little body work that would be easier to do while ON THE FRAME and I think Ill mount my 2M radio as well off the over heads on the cage.

It getting SOOOO CLOSE NOW I can TASTE IT!

Few more of the license plate bracket and a refresher shot of how they light up. Ill wire those with a disconnect plug (of course) for when I need the spare OFF!:grinpimp:

Looks good. That's how my tire ended up . Run 37's and the only thing on the swing is the tire. High lift mount to tabs off rear of cage.
tic toc, your paint will be wet at rubithon

Yeah... I thought I could work it. I could if I were gonna stick with the 35's, but I plan on 36-37 in Iroks when I get the cash saved, and that would be a NO GO with the set up I had originally. Still considering mounting the cans to each side of the tire. That seems as though it would work, but...like I mentioned above, that'll have to wait till I GET new tires.

Nice work, are you going to add a floodlight to the licence plate bracket, it would be nicely enclosed by the rim.:hhmm:

Thanks man. No plans for a light back there. Ive got a head lamp!:hillbilly:

I've found that they are very prone to getting whacked by rocks if you hang them off the back on either side.

Be better to lay them flat on the roof on a small rack if you can.

Screw the cans, I vote for a simple aux tank under the DS seat. Building the second one should be easier than the first one, right?

That I could probably find a tank to fit a summit for under the seat. Could do one on each side.

Even if they were elevated to the center line on the tire?
One thing I don't want Is that much weight. On the top. Not gonna happen.

Think of how often taillights on waggons get bashed..

Even tall waggons.

Right, but that is the most extreme outer edge of a 2 ft over hang. If the cans were tucked within the span of the rear of the tub it theoretically shouldn't be that much of an issue. I think the way I had it it was more likely to get slammed coming off a ledge or dragging going up a steep incline.
I guess I'll find out either way!:)

That is why we used to mount the cans right next to and flat against the tail gate, just above the main tire carrier cross bar and space the tire out the ~6". We used the stock Wrangler spare tire "rubbers" to dampen them. Did it on Jeep Wranglers with 37's and 35's (mine), so you should be able to do it on a 40. Keeps them close to the vehicle and protected by the tire. Never had a problem on Rubicon, Fordyce or Moab. Plus it makes a great place to secure your chairs or other long light (tent) items to. You know, if you decide not to do the under seat aux tank thing.

That sounds like a good design. Even if he did the under seat aux tank he could mount a couple of those tall ammo cans in the same manner to carry recovery gear or wag bags.

I've been gone on vacation since Friday and here I am still hours from home checking in and you still have done nothing...

yap!!! Still a LOSER!:crybaby:

A quality rig takes a lot of time thinking before making.:hhmm:

LOL...
Thanks Michael! Dont go accusing ME of THINKING though!
Been spending a lot of time doing the little loose end stuff right now that's not altogether worth mentioning/ photographing.
Getting the e brake cable secured, getting the 2M mounted, reinforcing the steering column bracket...crap like that.
Most of the hard stuff is that requires my MUCH NEEDED brain power is behind me. Until the wiring that is.
