that rust is fixable, esp. for a trail truck.

time to buy a welder and grinder and some plate steel...get to work.

That is true. I have the welder and grinder but with me going to run 80 axles it will be easier for the build. Plus with the condition of the frame I’m a little concerned about the rest of the spots. The truck is from NJ most of its life. With that it would just be easier for me with the option the has been offered There’s a roller that @Roxx has that has the frame and axles. All I would need to do is get a drivetrain and then mount the body and cut the extra frame off the back and I’m done. It already has the axles mounted. I will have the coils and the softer ride. The 4 link in the rear. And a stronger frame for the setup I would be running then I would just repairing the spots with the rust. (wish it would be as easy as it sounds). Just with that thought in my mind. It’s seems like a simpler and easier route for me in the long run.

Look at it as a silver lining in the direction of your project! Curious, have you compared the width of the 80 frame to the truck frame? That would be a pretty big hurdle if it is way too wide. I have no idea, but would just want to know before putting much effort into parts collection.

The plus of having an 80 at home. When I get out of school tonight I’m going to measure the both of them and see.

Just took a measurement of both truck from side to side. The pickups frame is roughly 45.5" wide on the rear body mounts for the cab and then just over 34" for the front body mounts, and the 80 frame is just above 48 from the middle body mounts to body mount of where the rear of the cab would sit for my truck. and 31" for the front body mount to body mount. In theory this all should be no trouble just figuring out where the mount the body mounts and how to do so.

Dang @4LowandSlow im super impressed!!!! Here you are working on a major frame swap at 15 years old and I can’t even figure out why my heat sucks and my radio doesn’t work in my 80

Great news G! This should be a fun build. The thing (IMO) to keep in mind here is that you want that balance between being able to drive it to the trails, and kicking butt once you get there. Choose wisely on your gearing because a 22re "ain't gonna' turn no 37s" on 3.73s.

Let me know if you end up selling any boby parts that you may not keep, please :).

His mud name is 4lowandslow

Exactly my point, sorta :)

The 4Lo gearing isn't going to help that 22re push a set of 37's on the drive to and from the trail. Having been in some mini trucks with stock gearing on 35's on the street, I just know it's something to think about.

Well things got out of hand. WAY out of had ahaha. After a much needed reality check from Stan it's a mini truck, and some time to sleep on it so I'm gonna build a dang mini truck, Not go for a full frankenstein build as Stan has said to me. As much as it would be unique and something that's never been done before from what I've seen, At the end of the day everyone wants a rig they can beat on all day and get back home or to put on the trailer and come back again and do it all over again. After my dad talking to a buddy that wheels mini trucks and he said you keep it clean. Simple. And functional. And that’s what I want as do. So I’m just gonna do a mini truck axle with a highsteer. Keep the rear axle and just throw some crowmolies in it with some lockers. Repair and strengthen the frame. And throw some 63” springs under it. And put doublers in it. As much as me and my dad want to do the 80 frames it’s just not in the state of funds but also the space we have to pull it off. Thanks @Roxx for the offer for the roller, we almost texted Johnny to get the trailer lol. But I think this would be better for me but also I would like to drive it before I’m in college LOL. So that’s what the plan is and maybe a trip to Bolivia NC for the axle and high steer on Sunday cause I have driving on Saturday for drivers Ed. Thank y’all all again for all the ideas and suggest but also the offers, and a huge thanks to @NCFJ for your thoughts on it and the reality check.

That what i told your dad. How much do you want that project to happen. I think you pukk the plug at the right time. Sell the parts and save some money for a beat up 80.

There are a few cheap 80's out there. I was looking at a built 80 from Jacksonville. It was listed on CL for $4500 but he said he wants it gone and would sell it for $3500 and he was going to drive it half way to Raleigh just to meet me. 35's, DC front shaft, 3 inch lift. The interior was shot but the truck looked really good.

Yeah I’ve been looking around seeing a few. I don’t need 2 rigs though already have one. But if the plan falls through I’m gonna just get a cheap 80

are you posting in second period at school?

either way hurry this up, you owe about half of us late night rides around camp :grinpimp:

Pretty sure a frankenstein mini is not near as unique and rare as expected.... id venture to say 1/2 if not more of the builds out there are a bit overly custom. Plus, if you sell one off youll only have one left; core math there folks. The early trucks on an 80 frame has been done a few times but your logic is sound except maybe starting with a rusty frame, but price was right. The parts available for mini's are way more plentiful and cheap compared to 80s. That said a locked 95 with 160k and front end damage just sold for 2700 in winston a whole 4 miles from the same color donor at pull apart for the cheap fix up parts....poor timing or it would be here.
