Man,
i have to admit for someone who is personally not a huge fan of yellow on vehicles, that looks really good.

it looks really straight. good work.

are they going to paint the firewall / engine bay at all or leave it the old white color??

keep up the pics

Later,

They painted the cowl and painted the inside lip. They have offered to paint the front brace (or whatever that thing is called that the hood support is fastened to) but said that they normally don't. I'm going to leave it for now and see if it bothers us.

They are currently painting all the black pieces and are hoping to get the vehicle back to us by the end of the day this Friday. It's hard to describe the black that they are using but it looks fantastic. They call it a flat black (base/clear system) but it has incredible depth to the finish and doesn't look anything like Rustoleum flat black.

I took the interior pieces over to them yesterday and they are going to spray them but we may not have those back until early next week. We can still get the new seats, carpet, bumpers and other items reinstalled so that my son can start driving it to school again.

Well they didn't quite get done today so it will be Monday or Tuesday. I'd rather leave it with them until they are happy since I think that will also make me happy. :-)

They sprayed all the outside rubber parts, grill, door handles, etc. the same black as the top. They look new.

Here's some crappy iphone pics of the progress:

There are two rubber bumpers on each door that go into holes top and bottom. The photo shows the top hole (circled in red) and the bottom hole is out of the picture. I can get a photo on Monday of the parts but they are just black rubber bumpers and I assume keep the door from banging against the jam.

I've been on ToyotaDIY and cannot find the part number unless it is one of the "standard parts". My best guess based on their diagrams is 90950-01620 but I'm far from certain. I need to phone Sam on Monday to order another part or two and would like to get 4 of these as the original ones are falling and/or fell apart when they were removed prior to painting.

Anyone have a number?

Man that thing turned out beautifully. They did a great job with it. This gives me hope for my current sloooow build for my 88 4Runner.

Holy cow, that thing looks awesome. I wish I had the courage to change mine to that color. I actually briefly considered switching to Nissan Xterra yellow, but I guess I like red too much. I don't think the yellow would look right with my gray interior either.

I don't think that is the part number for what you want. Those look like the plastic plugs that go over the holes that provide access to the little bolts for the door handles. See how there's another one at the front? Weird that they aren't listed.

You should upgrade your mirrors to the slightly larger nicer ones. Same mounting holes.

Yea these mirrors are pretty small but these were just sprayed to match so I guess we'll keep them for now.

I'm not sure about yellow with gray interior either but you're probably right. Red and gray go together pretty well and I like the red.

Spraying all the black really helped this vehicle. They even sprayed the black surround around the rear tail lights, the rear emblem, etc. I can't wait to get the bumpers back on it and the black plastic rear trim and rock guards (all of which look new now).

Well I found the part number by putting all of the "standard part" numbers on the door page (Toyota DIY) into an online Toyota parts website.

It's called a Door Check Cushion and the original part number is 90541-09036. That number has been superseded and the new number is 90541-09062. It looks like they are still available.

Looks fantastic!

Have you ever considered having the void areas on the turbine wheels painted to match the body color or just black like the trim?

I hand painted some with black model paint by hand a long time ago and it really made the wheels look great.

We discussed that and also thought about blacking them completely out. We have decided for now to just clean them up and see how they look. The paint shop has recommended a cleaner to use.

Well we finally got it home and have it mostly put back together. The glass guy still needs to install the black windshield trim but otherwise the exterior is done.

I'm pretty happy with the color.

nice work.
me thinks you need to black the wheels like you suggested earlier though.

Unfortunately the paint shop wanted $150 per rim to paint them to match. They said they would need to remove the powdercoating between the spokes. I can buy new rims for less than that. At the moment my son is pretty happy with them. We have a local guy that does powdercoating. I might check with him and see what he charges per rim. I'm sure it's cheaper than $150 per rim.

The glass guy installed the window trim yesterday. Here's a couple of final pics that I took this morning.

$150?? for paint???
ouch.
that is outrageous. you made the right call then. yeah my local powder coater will do any color, any size rim, for like 50 a wheel.

for that price you could pick up a set of pretty ratty stock aluminum wheels of craigslist and have em refinished in gloss black powdercoat for less than 300. that would be my plan.

$150 sounds about right. There is a LOT of prep work on rims, otherwise the finish will just flake back off and you'll be back for a free re-spray.

Ask a hot rod guy how much they spend on rims being done right, that price is cheap. Sometimes these guys want the OEM rims to stay authentic, and they are no longer available, so they have to pay whatever it costs.

I actually think they look great the way they are.
