I've read that about the aluminum shims but, I do not drive this truck very often and it will more than likely never see mud. My buddy had aluminum shims on his CJ for 7 years w/o issue and just removed them because he is installing a taller lift. I guess it just depends. I will eventually swap the aluminum ones for steel. OK, I'm off to 4WP

You don't want to tighten the steering box adjuster nut if the pitman shaft bushings are worn out. This can crack your box casting when you hit a bump. Replace the worn bushings first.

I'll bite - how can I determine if my pitman shaft bushings are worn out?

Like you would check any other bushing: Does the shaft flop around in the bushing hole or does it only rotate?
Have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you peek at the pitman shaft.

Thanks.

I am chasing an intermittant shimmy in my steering wheel. I have torqued u-bolts, tightened shackles, torqued steering box mount, tightened rag joint at pitman arm.

I cannot see any slop in the TRE's, but they have been on the rig since 2000, and they didn't look new then.

I reckon it is either TRE's or maybe my box?

Hijack off.

Finally got a chance to drive the 40 after installing the shims. There is still a slight wander to the steering but not as bad as it used to be. Now remember it's got new TRE's, rebuilt center arm and the box has been adjusted as well as the adjustment on the arm so what else could it be? The alignment tech said go 4* and it did help quite a bit so would 6* be better and stop the wandering or is it something else I'm missing?

Thanks

Did you have your rear toe checked? You may have dog tracking.

Thanks.

Howdy! Small vibs can be cause by the front tires being just a fraction of an oz out of balance, and then they create a harmonic as the outside tire runs just a bit faster on turns. If it fades in and out on long freeway curves, that could be it. John

Thanks John.

It has survived rotating tires front to rear, but that doesn't mean everything was balanced...
