My Carburetor Insulator has a hole that matches up with the hole in the base of the carb that the hallow mount bolt (that holds the base and the body together) goes thru. The Gasket between the Insulator and the carburetor has no hole that matches - so no manifold vacuum is transferred. My question is "Should there be a hole in the gasket to allow manifold vacuum or should it be blocked off by the gasket"?

When I went to SOR web site they show no hole in the gasket or insulator.

Thanks
David

Toyota never serviced those gaskets, they were bonded permanently to the insulator. It appears your insulator may still have the gasket bonded to it.

If that observation is accurate then the hole needs to be there and you already have a "gasket" in place.

Maybe a better question is "Should there be a hole in the Insulator and if so what is the purpose of the hole"? If the hole is suppose to be there then others should have seen it and I think all of these FJ40 carbs have the hallow mount screw to provide vacuum (I assume). I have been unable to find any photos of an insulator with this hole. I may need to call Mark on this one.

Suggest you watch Pin_Head's video on rebuilding an Aisan Carb. That hole needs to be there. I think the gasket is wrong--there should be a hole there(at least for 75 and up carbs)--Your idle circuit won't work without it.

Note:
Green gasket came from SOR not with the rebuild kit.

Pin Head video is great, but not the same carb - his is a later model that has a insulator plate between the base and the body must be 75 or later carb.

Hi
A few questions for you.
First nice work on the extractors and manifold .
1 What is the added pipe on the inlet manifold for?
2 Did you need to machine the extractors so were it bolts to the inlet manifold both the inlet manifold and the extractors are the same thickness ? I have a miss match of 1.5 mm . The Toyota manifold being 8.5 to 9 mm and the extractors being 10 mm thick.
3 Have the extractors been coated? And are they of a inside or out side chassis design?

Re the carby spacer problem I have noticed on my build I have a flat in one of the circles and wondered what way does this go? I do not recall a hole in the spacer block as per your photo. My 40 would not idle prior to the pull down. Even after fitting a new aftermarket look a like copy of the original carby I had problems. Now I wonder if the spacer block is part of my problem.
Sadly I can not check any of this as I'm traveling with work for the next 2 weeks.

A photo of your build would be nice. A photo of the exhaust system would be good to.
I will watch this site with great interest as I am up to this part on my build.
Cheers

To answer your questions:
1 there is a hose that goes from the pipe to the PCV valve - Manifold, Carb Insulator, carb are from a F motor the rest is 2F
2 buy your header from Marks Offroad and you will have no problems with flange thickness difference.
3 Header is chrome finish from Maks Offroad - I put a ceramic coating on the inside.

Sorry for the crappy picture, will try to get some better ones to post. Head, Block and are painted the rest of the parts I powder coated.

I went ahead and installed the carb with no gaskets.

Hi
Thank you for the answers.
I like the powder coated valve cover.
Looking at the photo it looks like you powder coated the sump.
I had the same idea and was very pleased with the results.
I was not aware the manifold was from the F motor . Thank you for clearing this up.
For my extractors I ended up putting them on the mill and machining all faces the same.
Have you a thread going on your build as I would like to read?
A photo of my manifold and carby with a powder coated air cleaner . The air cleaner came up very nice.
Cheers

What size are the acorn valve cover nuts?

the internal thread? i think they are 8mm, but the nut is a 19mm socket.

Thank you-helps

So should there be a hole in the insulator?
