Spent a few hours tearing some stuff off today.

It looks sad. Next weekend I'll pull the rest of the body hopefully.

I found 51 more cents too!

I got the grill mostly welded together. Filler/Primer on the grill will hopefully be done this weekend.

Thanks Cousinavi!

So I didn't do any work on the cruiser this weekend. I did make change in my battle plan though. I'm going to keep the body on for now and fab up so body panels and patches and weld them in. That way, when I take it off I know they're in the proper spots and I can paint it, be done and move on the other things without the body rusting away. That may change still as I'll be building my house and the barn will be pulled down before or while that is going on.

Took off a few things today then decided to tinker with the seat belts to see why they were locked.
I was taking one apart and was thinking "there's probably a very large spring in here somewhere, better make sure I'm careful..." then the spring exploded out of the side and wrapped itself around a nearby ladder.
Good news, I fixed the other one knowing what NOT to do.

Oh yeah, I found another $2.33, a fishing lure AND some soggy cigarettes.

Nice catch on the Cruiser,
I like the front bib ! I think you have a winner and could see that selling once pollished up.
While your at it send in some other things to be powder coated !

Looking forward to more pics on the rebuild ! !

Just talked to my buddy who water jetted the "Land Cruiser" plate, I sent him some CAD drawings for wheel wells and quarter panels. They should be done next week so I will hopefully be doing some welding next weekend.

Don't worry Alberta Mac, I'm making a list of things to get powder coated. For all of my leafs (after I disassemble the packs and get an extra leaf for each one) will be $25 for all four packs. I might as well powder coat the truck if its going to be that cheap! Too bad I already have my color picked out haha

So it has been a while since I've done anything but I'm waiting on my quarter panels and my friend has been pretty busy at work to get them cut.

In the meantime I've taken the alternator out because it was disgusting and to check up on the threads on the shaft in the vacuum pump. (I dont know if you can tell where the treads are damaged)

As I expected they were slowly wearing away so I'll do my fix I did on the previous alternators to prevent losing power brakes and clutch. While I've taken it out I'll be cleaning it and rebuilding it since I'm there anyway.

(Thats just a view of how dirty the whole thing was)

On my previous Cruiser I went between 3 alternators because of those stupid threads and because one wouldn't charge.

I disassembled the entire alternator and started cleaning it, if I'm lucky I'll prime it tomorrow. I have to track down a bearing. The bearing wasn't bad but it's starting to make a scratchy noise so I thought since it's out and apart I might as well do it now. Bought brushes and I'll solder those in this weekend. Reassembly of the alternator is depending on when I get the bearing and when I can paint the case.

Pictures to come.

Today I drilled out the spot welds on the fender liner skirt and measured out where they'll sit to be raised and widened.

I still need to figure out what length of driveshafts I'll need after I flip my leafs.

Progress is slow if my father in-law can get my bearing my alternator should be done this week. WooHoo!

I haven't been near a drill press yet. They get warn out and then eventually, as 3 of my previous alternators have, end up with no threads (if you can see where the wear marks are) and won't create vacuum. I'll be doing the fix when I get all my alternator bits together and ready for reassembly, all I do is drill a hole in that shaft and the same size hole in the "paddle wheel" and put a role pin through them. To keep the role pin in place I'll get some headless bolts to close off the holes.
Pictures of what I've just described will come with the alternator reassembly.

PS I can't take credit for this, I learned it from Simon.

The Grill

I finally uploaded some pictures from my iPhone so I can explain a few other things that I've done.

First off I was super excited to actually start work on my new purchase so the first night I made quite a few of embarrassing mistakes. Oh well, better to laugh with people who can laugh with you. :o Here it goes...
The grill:

I drew a fairly simple shape with straight lines to mark what I'd be cutting off to get rid of the rust. I measured it out and drew it on the "Land Cruiser" piece my friend cut for me. On the corners a made tabs that I'd hammer down and weld so it was the same as the original piece. I cut it all out and laid it on top to get an idea if it would fit.

I measured once, eye balled and cut. I lined everything up and tacked it together... Turns out I should measure twice and cut once like my Dad told me growing up. I ended up with about a quarter inch gap if not more.

IMG_0650.jpg

Then I realized I forgot about the bend for where the finish plate sits. I ended up cutting the piece off and welding it back on with it over lapping to create the edge.
During the welding (where I decided to just weld across the giant gap) I wanted to get it all done and pretty looking so I got to welding without making a proper spot on the table and without clamping it down AND didn't let it cool enough between welding sections AND warped it... I'm so not impressed with myself. :whoops:
You can't see the warp in the pictures but I thought I'd be honest. I fixed it a bit and I'll be putting a mesh behind it which should stiffen it up. Should.

That's how it sits now. I got to frustrated with my stupidity and it sits in the corner of the garage to remind me to MEASURE TWICE AND CUT ONCE!! Oh and DON'T TAKE SHORT CUTS!!! :bang:

The roll bar was rusted off haha the barn will only fall on the one side... I hope

I'd be more worried about finding a roll bar for myself, wear a hard hat while in there! :p

How is the frame on that thing? Body wise it looks like it couldn't have been left much longer before being rescued.

Seat Belts

So every now and again I go in the barn just to look at the sad state of the Cruiser and dream of what it [hopefully] will be. One of those days I thought I'd try and do some work but since I didn't have any of my equipment there yet I had limited options. I drained the oil, took out the alternator (which is when I decided to rebuild it), and then decided to try and diagnose and maybe even fix my seat belts.

My seat belts that came with the truck were pulled all the way out of the "winding box" and locked there. I started unscrewing one cover without paying much attention.
I was thinking
"There is probably some gigantic spring in here, I should figure out where it is and be careful"
No word of a lie, just as I finished thinking that BAM! The cover shot past my face and the spring skimmed my stomach and wrapped around a ladder that was about 3 feet away from me. It wouldn't have done much damage if it hit me but WOW that scared the baggizzers out of me. I couldn't help but laugh for the next 10 minutes as I untangled it from the ladder and tried to put it back in the case.

IMG_0673.jpg

The spring SHOULD be right there.

IMG_0674.jpg

Bench top to ladder.

IMG_0675.jpg

Aaaaaand the ladder

After putting it back in with difficulty I read the cover.

IMG_0676.jpg

CAUTION DO NOT REMOVE. Now I know they weren't kidding :D

I put that assembly aside and grabbed the other one and took the cover off the OPPOSITE side and found the problem. There was a small plastic piece with a weight that if the vehicle were upside down (or on any incline by the looks of the design) it would lock the seat belt. I pulled it out since there was still the centripetal lock in a fast braking situation attached to the winding mechanism.

(I'll take pictures of it next weekend, I left it in the barn)

Now one is fixed and I'll see if I can figure out how to wind the spring up and reinstall it properly. After an hour I couldn't get it. I guess I'll just have to choose my passengers wisely until I do (If I ever get to that point) :p

I'd be more worried about finding a roll bar for myself, wear a hard hat while in there! :p

How is the frame on that thing? Body wise it looks like it couldn't have been left much longer before being rescued.

I can run REALLY fast so I don't need a hard hat:D

The frame has a bit of surface rust but is completely solid. That was one of the selling features, the rust holes helped sell it as well more for the reaction my friends gave me when they saw it for the first... second... third (you get the point) times. My wife had the best reaction by far.

Walked in the barn. Her mouth was smiling but her eyes had a mix of surprise and worry.
"It... looks like... like a..." smiled and snorted "a pile of junk!"
Then walked out laughing,
"Have fun or... whatever you do"

I had it out and gave the seat belt a yank and it still locks without it. Will it fail with more weight then me pulling it? I'll just take your word for the steering wheel haha
