Seat Belts
So every now and again I go in the barn just to look at the sad state of the Cruiser and dream of what it [hopefully] will be. One of those days I thought I'd try and do some work but since I didn't have any of my equipment there yet I had limited options. I drained the oil, took out the alternator (which is when I decided to rebuild it), and then decided to try and diagnose and maybe even fix my seat belts.
My seat belts that came with the truck were pulled all the way out of the "winding box" and locked there. I started unscrewing one cover without paying much attention.
I was thinking
"There is probably some gigantic spring in here, I should figure out where it is and be careful"
No word of a lie, just as I finished thinking that BAM! The cover shot past my face and the spring skimmed my stomach and wrapped around a ladder that was about 3 feet away from me. It wouldn't have done much damage if it hit me but WOW that scared the baggizzers out of me. I couldn't help but laugh for the next 10 minutes as I untangled it from the ladder and tried to put it back in the case.
The spring SHOULD be right there.
Bench top to ladder.
Aaaaaand the ladder
After putting it back in with difficulty I read the cover.
CAUTION DO NOT REMOVE. Now I know they weren't kidding
I put that assembly aside and grabbed the other one and took the cover off the OPPOSITE side and found the problem. There was a small plastic piece with a weight that if the vehicle were upside down (or on any incline by the looks of the design) it would lock the seat belt. I pulled it out since there was still the centripetal lock in a fast braking situation attached to the winding mechanism.
(I'll take pictures of it next weekend, I left it in the barn)
Now one is fixed and I'll see if I can figure out how to wind the spring up and reinstall it properly. After an hour I couldn't get it. I guess I'll just have to choose my passengers wisely until I do (If I ever get to that point)
