I am from Colombia and its a gorgeous country, It has been my lifelong dream (only 23 years old) to drive all the way to Argentina. Yeah colombia is an unsafe country at times but its not as you would think the Media makes it out to be. The people are very friendly and very hospitable. Ask any american who goes to colombia and they will tell you something different than what you may think they would say. I am up for a ride from USA to Argentina anytime. It would be an awesome expedition and I am building my rig just for that, now I just want to find people to come along.

WORLD CRUISER - you cant count me in. That gives me more than enough time to build my 80 and have it ready for that specific trip. Are you going by yourself or do you have a group of people that are going to go? I am in florida so i am sure we can meet somewhere and head west!!!

Hmmmm.....this is starting to sound interesting. 1 year and a half and you are leaving NC to go south? Funny, my wife (spanish decent) mentioned moving to Costa Rica to start a const. biz for vacation homes (I'm in construction) so she could do some sort of immersion spanish health/whatever....don't really know why she wants to go, but CR is beautiful. The timing would be about right and although I wouldn't be going near as far, the thought of traveling with others makes it seem better. Boy...trekking that far with a 40 would completely suck though.

Im from venezuela

Do you want to feel the real power? Get in a FJ71 brand new here and you will feel it I Promise.

You guys at US that want to get one there, do ALL YOU CAN DO!.

About the airbag you could try to adapt the one from the cannadian model.

Bringing in a 1985 BJ70 from Canada was a breeze. I originally bought one from BC with the intention of selling my 80 series. I have since sold the 70.

I think the Darian Gap expedition would be very cool, and very disappointing.
You are basically driving across a swap. I did some research on this.
It is possible, but most people hire guides between villages to show them the best and safest way of traveling. Not many of our vehicles would make the trip, I include myself there. I doubt my 80 would do it unless I install a Slee 6" lift and 35" MT (or bigger, and portals would be nice too).

And if you do make it, you end up in guerilla ruled drug country Columbia, and I am sure they would just love to have our cruisers. It's noted as the most dangerous place to travel on earth.

Sorry to be the pessimist.

Cheers,
Nick

Today is your unlucky day.... a true Colombian (and proud of it) has joined the disscussion. First off... i would like to mention that i have been doing 4x4 in my precious country for over 3 years with rigs very similar if not even better than yours. We trail the country with groups of 6 cars including brand new Jeep Wrangler Rubicons, Land Rover Defenders and all sorts of Toyotas. It is also important to note that Colombia is not what they depict in the drug movies, if you would like to make such a strong statement about "guerillas" and "the most dangerous place to travel on earth" i suggest you back up your oppinion. On another hand, i would also suggest getting the spelling right.

Please dont take my anger and rage against your comments the wrong way, i am extremely interested in reading about all sorts of trails and opinions world wide, as well as checking out everyones ride. I just get extremely hyped up when i get to a missconception like the one you posted. Please, if you have something negative to say about a country, back it up with some sort of evidence, ask me or anyone who has lived/been/seen or heard a bit more about the problem. I joined the forum today, so i dont want to start off on a bad note, so please, by all means, ask me whatever you might want about Colombia and i surely will answer to the best of my abilty.

just my .02

welcome to the forum,
i would love to see some wheeling pics or links to them...
cheers and peace

This is what I found about the kidnappings in Columbia:

Due to considerable effort on the part of the Colombian government to improve security throughout the country, homicide numbers declined by 20 percent from 2002 to 2003 and an additional 12 percent from 2003 to 2004, to a countrywide figure of about 20,200, which is the lowest number in 18 years. While narcotics and guerrilla-related violence account for part of this violence, common criminals are responsible for an estimated 75 percent of the reported murders. Additionally, the Government of Colombia reports a 50 percent decline in the number of kidnappings in the past four years. Although Colombia continues to have one of the highest rates of kidnapping for ransom in the world, kidnappings decreased by 42 percent from 2003, with 1250 kidnappings in 2004 - the lowest number in 10 years.

Now take it with a grain of salt as we all know how accuratly the americans report on things - like WMD. So they could be off by a couple of kidnappings - or maybe there are none at all. If it is true the good thing is that the numbers are dropping to only 1250 kidnappings in 2004.

I'd feel better if you rephrased that comment to sound something more like "the always politcally biased us mainstream media" rather than "The Americans". ;p
Those of us Americans with good common sense, know that whenever money (ratings) is involved, things in the media will be twisted to make a good story. I don't believe half the crap I read/hear/see....unless I was there myself or personally know the parties involved.

And I know this will get me in trouble....WMD. If I tell you I'm sending the police over to your house because you are growing pot, what are the chances it will still be there when the cops show up? :flipoff2:

Well, ok, I will change it to - "the bush administration backed by atleast 51 percent of the american people":)

Regards

In Canada? Probably pretty good chance that it'll still be there ;)

Since you seem to be looking for ways to get better cruisers take a look here.
http://www.adventureimports.net

Most of the imports come in through B.C. and are vin'ed there.
They usualy come from Japan .(no pun intended)

I am also new to this forum. I'm enjoying the 2nd cruiser in my life.
Its from Japan, has 52,ooo Kilometers on it with no rust.. OH !! it also has Right hand drive..which I just love.. LJ78 1990 Land cruiser Prado SX5. Like new....and you heard me right LIKE NEW..

The first was a FJ40 from the early 70's
OK so that makes me 55 years old BUT never to old to love a cruiser.

Check out the link I have included..You just may find something of interest.. If not do a search imports surprising what's actually out there..

Richard

curious Richard,
are you hinting that you bought your cruiser from Adventure Imports (Louis)?

have you done a search on the short comings of the LJ78 so you can take preventive maintainence, that would be a good start. there is a few threads on guages that shoudl be installed into these rigs as well.

congrates on your purchase
cheers
