I plan to keep my roof intact with my install. I prefer a sleeping area that's separate, sealed up, (more) dust free and cleaner during travel. And, for my needs, I prefer the versatility of keeping an interior can carry people or gear... Or people and gear, putting personal dry bags on the roof. @Durban Gobi makes a compact ladder that fixes to the rear hatch; that's what I plan to use.

If and when my barn doors make it I will be cutting my top with a full remodel inside with more than seating for 2.

This is my latest plan unless Maltec sponcers me. Hint hint:D:santa::crybaby:

Did you see the post recently where someone in Poland converted the 80 rear hatch (and tailgate?) to swingout?

Ive seen that but I have a 4x4 labs bumper so that wouldn’t work. I could run their ladder but id rather have the jerry can holder for longer trips. If I get the campteq ill most likely get a nice compact collapsable ladder and TIG a quick disconnect kind of thing to the system somewhere.

Or you could do the side ladder mod like Ronny Dahl's buddy Harry. That would provide quarter panel protection too.

True that setup is nice for someone who spends as much time as those guys in the outback but the reality for me is that the truck sees road a lot more than it does gravel, so I dont need something quite so intense. Good suggestion though

I like that idea too. Haven't seen anyone who makes a side ladder for the 80 though. But somebody in Australia likely does. Wouldn't be too hard to weld up if you have the gear and skills.

I have the Gobi hatch ladder option

True. I believe he used a GQ Patrol ladder but it looks suspiciously like the ladder that @LandCruiserPhil has on the back of his... (DOH, he beat me to it!)

You can see what I'm talking about at 9 minutes in this video:

Seems like you could make a clamp on verision, using gutter rail. Or @Thecriscokid could maybe incorporate a provision for something like this by adding a couple u shaped pockets to hang a ladder on?

No dice relocating that thread. I'll keep looking.

The gent was in Poland. He'd built a pop top and a swingout hinge onto the rear hatch -- and built quite a bit of storage into it aft of where the rear window had been. I don't recall if the tailgate was swingout too.

Since tailgate 80 bodies don't mate with 80 barn doors, hinging one or both of the rear hatch and tailgate (or merging them into one) to make a swingout rear end might be less work than the barn door option; the body, rear hatch and tailgate shapes already mate.

I think it'd really increase the livability of the rig and ease getting in and out. It'd make me reconsider cutting my roof.

The plot thickens. Keep us posted. If they do fit, that'd be an interesting option for sure.

Phil - what benefits do you see having the povo pack barn doors?

HUGE game changer having a set up like the 70 series. Spare stays behind larger of the two door making seamless getting in and out through the small door. In addition I will cut my roof and have a lift up bed for standing room and o'course build out the inside Maltec style.
