I tried that a couple times. Even sprayed simple green on them and let them kind of soak first. But it never was enough.

Well, you certainly gave it the old college try. That's good to know. The pictures of your old ones could be pictures of mine...very similar.

mine weren't quite as dirty, but I had success pulling them all the way out, clamping them off at the top so they don't retract, and soaking them in dawn and water repeatedly and scrubbing them with a stiff bristled brush. mine wouldn't always retract all the way back in due to being stiff.
