Last year we most of us met and camped in the Brown's creek area Friday night.

So you kind of get the idea. You can do your own thing in terms of difficulty. I would propose something similar where folks could base camp and others could camp in a different spot the second night.

Based on discussions farther down in this thread this will be the general plan. Go over Mosquito pass and camp somewhere Friday evening. Sat. Do Birdseye gulch and then run down south to BV area. Run one of the Lake Trail such as Pomeroy, Grizzley, Baldwin or Hancock and camp near a lake. Sun, go to Alpine tunnel and run Williams Pass (only open in August) and then down Tomichi Pass and run Taylor Mtn or Billings Lake if there is time.

Proposed camp spot for Friday night, Cooney Lake. Should be near summit, coordinates from Google Maps 39.305048,-106.170158

So here are a few general options, trying to mix it up a bit.

3 - Take Hwy 50 out to near Howard and take Hayden Pass and camp somewhere. Sat. and Sun. Explore the Rawley mine Bonanza area. see links below

Not thinking of anything too difficult such as Iron Chest etc.
 
Option 1or 2 seems best for a BV weekend. I've been wanting to explore Hancock pass and the lakes.. Keep in mind my son's 60 is bone stock and he does not have much wheeling experience. Most of the trails looked Ok but not sure Williams is doable for him. Will have to look it over when we get there.
 
Looking more like I might get to go on this trip.

Anyone else thinking of going? Bringing kids? My 5 year old was mad I didn't take her on the last trip when she saw the pictures of all the flowers. :)

IIRC Williams wasn't very hard at all last year - other then the very tight turn to get onto it after coming back from Alpine Tunnel. Would be easy if you're pointed the other direction.

Put me down for a maybe - still looking at the TODO list.
 
I'm in as of right now. Might bring the pickup out.

I prefer option one: I like the idea of Mosquito pass, not sure we could make a lake trail and still make Alpine, Billings, Tomichi, and Taylor all in one day. This past Saturday morning it was 10:30 before everyone was ready to leave camp, so we might have to account for that. I would really like to see Alpine tunnel and Williams, and have never been over Mosquito.

I know for sure my pickup can't make Grizzly lake's first 500 feet, but can make the rest of the trail with a couple of tugs from a strap through the first section.

Yea, that initial step on Grizzly will definitely limit the stock 60 as well.
 
So I will update this thread a little later but it looks like option 1 or some variation is it. I'll try to find a camp spot. I knew the route was ambitious but at least it sparked the conversation ;) Now there was and "or" between Billings and Taylor and an "if" in there as well.

I have never been to Baldwin or Hancock lakes.

Williams can get more challenging when wet and we have been getting summer rains. Worst case we leave the 60 at the tunnel and come back for it. Not that long of a detour.

We are hoping we might be able to make this, but it's a very big maybe at this point. It would be the '86 IFS 4Runner, stock ride height with ARB rear locker and Truetrac front. This truck has to come home intact so we would opt for easier trails. Would be bringing a 3 year old and 8 year old. I'll follow this to see what trails you settle on and if it works out it works out.
 
We'll get it figured out. My son may come and if he does he will bring his fully stock '86 4runner. We can adapt the trails and ride alongs to the rigs we have.
 
Looks like I'm in for this one!!!

My mother-in-law is coming down to watch the kiddos and Jess' doctor said that she probably won't pop the baby out until the end of August. :grinpimp:

I can leave Friday Morning figure we can meet at the western gas station up near Woodland Park. Lets see what time Leon was planning on meeting.
 
Sorry guys, I have been in Portland since Sunday and it has been very hectic for me lately. My plan was to camp on the trail Friday night, somewhere on the Mosquito pass trail. I don't know what time I was thinking of leaving but certainly not in the morning, more like around 4:00.

If anybody wants to leave Saturday, I would suggest an early departure from the Western. Someone should have a radio in this ground to make meeting up easier, I have no idea of cell phone coverage in that area. My camp spot scouting was going to be strictly map based.

I'd like to head up during the day on Friday. I'll look for a good camping spot. Likely on the far side of the pass. If anyone has been up on Mosquito pass let me know where the best camping is for a group, Looks like some lakes in the area. I've got my Radio but only comfortable using simplex.

Well let's get you comfortable on repeaters so let's set up a time to do so by the end of the weekend. Then you can also practice next Tue. night on the HAM net.

You are missing out on a lot by only using simplex, especially for any type of emergency comm.

I'd like to try and get in on the repeater training action myself. If you don't mind, give me a call and I'll try out my new antenna.
