Here are a few ideas about the weekend so mark you calendars now! :steer:

We will set up camp in either the same place as last year or one of several other campgrounds in the area. Porta Potti will be around $100 dollars for the weekend, I need to talk to the Forest Service about setting it up. We could get a block of campsites in a campground that will have toilets, water, dumpsters etc., cost $15 per site/night. Some campgrounds are near streams in the trees. Either way the club can pick up those costs or part of the costs, to be discussed further. Chuck and I discussed doing a recon trip out there in the next couple of weeks to try to look things over. I'm proposing Sat. March 12th for that. Will start another thread after I talk to the Forest Service.

We will be set up to have people come in camping Friday night. Those not wanting to camp can drive in that morning or spend one or two night in a hotel in Buena Vista.

Trail runs- We were thinking of having two runs per day, one easier one a bit more challenging. There are other things to do out there as well, hang out in camp, old mine exploring and rock hounding, fishing etc. David M. will post up possible trails and other activities.

During the runs I was thinking of setting up a poker run, but the logistics may be a bit tougher with this type group as compared to car show type event in town. If there is interest lets hear some ideas. One might be to bring the poker run along with the vehicle and have the two groups meet at a lunch spot together.

Saturday night- I'm proposing a chili cook-off and group pot luck
Some type of kids activities would be fun, any ideas?

Sunday - Group breakfast or on our own? Trail runs?

This is just a proposed outline, we can modify as we get input, so let's hear it.

Please post up if you plan to come and how many people in your group.

Confirmed:

Leon - 1

Chuck -4

Luke - 1

Matt - 2 1/2

Sam - 2

Maybe:

Ryan - 2 1/2

Dave - 1

toy1195e - 2

Chuck - 4

I mentioned this to Leon on Saturday but my preference would be to camp and the same spot as last year and previous years. Since I will have RV, trailer and cruiser I need a parking lot just for myself.

A recon trip on March 12th sounds good to me.

I have never gone before. so did you guy's stay at a koa campground or something or is it a remote sight without water. I would say 3 and a baby but i never know when I will have to work the weekend. So it's more a maybe then anything.

The KOA is another option for a location to stay at. I have stayed there before with ATV's and trailers and they have extra parking if it's needed.

Well I might be helping some fellow fj'ers out with installing there lifts on the 12th, but if I don't I hope to make the recon trip. Where is the place you guy's have stayed at the years before.

We've stayed at Brown's Creek the last two years I have attended. It's a very good central location, but toiletry services are non-existent. pretty sparse tree cover for the ladies too. I like the location very much, it's quiet and has a hiking trail.

Some new information

I spoke with a FS representative and we do not need a permit as long as we are under 75 people, we are not charging for the event, nor guiding trips. The porta-potti is fine. She went on to tell me if we disperse camp then there are restrictions on how far off the road vehicles can park and that is one car length. The exception is if the area has been cleared and shows signs of use where they would expect no environmental damage. She said typically those types of areas are designated with a number for a dead end road. We will need to be careful of this if we decide to do the Brown's Creek site and check with FS to see how they view this area. One thing we can do is get GPS coordinates to the FS. Last thing we want is to get fined. More to think about for the recon trip.

Post up your intentions so we can get a head count. I'm updating the first post.

Check out the new thread for the recon trip. We need to plan asap according to both the port-potti rental place and campground info as reservations will go quickly.

Here is a link to the recon trip report, just trying to keep most of the discussion for the trip in this thread.

The second site looks better to me due to more trees. We can talk about this some more at the meeting this Tue. 15th. Big thanks to Chuck and Luke for going out there to check things out.

Andrew, good ideas for some kids activities.

I got the first letter right, sorry about that.
Corrected

Facilities update

Talked to Bruce at Antero septic and gave him directions to the second spot off 273. He knows the area, apparently pretty close to his house. Anyhow, I have a porta-potti reserved for the weekend and he confirmed the price of $100 for the weekend which includes delivery and pickup. He asked that we call July 1st to confirm or cancel and at that time we can give him more direction on exactly where we want it. Best if someone meets him there on Friday.

Just thought I would update this. We decided to stay at the koa and made reservations already so I am for sure going. I just found out that there is a toyota event there the weekend after. It's called Colorado Toyota Jamborree 2011 on July 29, 30, and 31st. Anybody ever heard of it. I guess it used to be called Colorado's 4runner jamboree and they have had it for 3 years now.

Great Matt, gald to hear your are coming. I don't know about the event but maybe others will chime in. David M. will add some trail/to do information soon...hint, hint.

I know at the last club meeting a few more people said they would be going. Please post up, we need to make a decision on the porta-poti soon and an accurate head count is needed.

Anybody want to start some trail option discussions? I just got the Wells book for my b-day but no first hand experience in that area.

For you HAM radio guys I'm planning on trying to hit the Echolink repeater and talk to Rui in the Azores on 2m.

Can you post or PM me your node?
